We should have 3D preview of inventory objects like other virtual worlds do.

How's it going to know how to make a little picture of every single thing I've made? Is that even possible?

It looks up the information, same as it would if the object is rezzed inworld, but it wouldn't need to fetch scripts or contents, calculate physics or collisions, or do fancy lighting.

I asked my friend about if their is way to make a viewer that shows little photos of in preview window of everything in my inventory...but never got response.
The only thing I can think that might be issue is the cost of photos and how to turn it into like hud like device or part of viewer itself.
I sort of miss how like in how The Sms you can see the image of the object in a preview screen here too.
I am very curious what a 3d viewer attached to one's inventory would be like.
Would it be like 3d temporary rezzing systems that are in some shops?
Where are you visiting that has one? Is the world open to new content or is it preset content?

I'm in Hipihi on my other computer at the moment, looking at the 3D rotating preview it gives for the user created item's in a user's backpack.

If there was a sufficiently easy way to display a video of this I would, but I haven't found an easy enough method of taking and uploading videos to suit my lazy bones.

I would also like the ability to somehow display regular non-prim clothing, in-world or out. I could clean out and organize my inventory so much faster if I didn't actually have to Wear every freaking item. Give me a mannequin or something that I could drop a shirt on to see what it looks like.

I love the idea and it would make things a lot easier for us. I just don't want the lag/server load issues that would come with it.

I love it to.

Maybe the asset server could generate a tiny preview animated image, and store it. That way, it would not use much processing power.

BUT...

It is our job to ask for things. figuring out if they can be implemented, and how to implement them, is *their* job.

I like the idea. The only problem I see is that it's more data to download for each inventory item. Not sure if it would be a prohibitive amount though.

At least show object's contents, that would be neat and handy!

I thought we are suppose to build everything here and Linden Labs are just suppose to be in charge of the hosting space and charging for services. LOL

Would it really cause more load issues than it would remove? Because it's not like we'd be previewing things more often, we'd just be previewing them with an actual, simpler preview image instead of rezzing and deleting them or wearing them and then taking them off.

I'll agree that the 3D preview wouldn't even be necessary -- a simple 2D pic in the properties window would cut down on a lot of rezzing time.

I think it depends on exactly where/when the preview is shown.

One thought is to update the inventory window itself so that the preview is shown next to (or perhaps even instead of) the icon that shows the inventory item type (i.e., the brown box for an object, the light blue t-shirt for a shirt, the red jacket for a jacket, etc...). That would be great for seeing a bunch of things at once but could be quite laggy due to having to download more data per inventory item. Plus, the preview might be too small to be practical so then the line item would have to be enlarged or there'd be a mouse over preview (there's all kinds of idea for doing this).

Another thought, from your post, is that the preview would only be shown when the user right-clicks and shows the properties for an item. This would still be useful and not require all the data download as the first thought.

I bet this is probably alot easier to add then some might think.

I say, don't try to make thumbnails, those take a lot more time to download and would have to be rendered by a server process somewhere.

Instead, if we just added a couple of new messages, similar to the object ones with some key differences, such as no velocity or acceleration being necessary... I don't imagine it should be hard for a sim to prepare the prims and send them to you without putting them in the simulation.

Maybe some day! :)

Edit: On second thought, about downloading the thumbnail... it might need to be weighed against the cost of downloading all the images on the faces of the prim, heh

i reckon the asset servers load could be reduced by a huge number.
i could probably pare back my 20,000 item inventory to less than 5000 items.

The Chinese version of SL has a 3d rotating inventory previewer. If they can do it, we can do it. It can easily be done. Why they haven't is beyond me. There must be something more complicated that we don't know about.

The resolution of the preview wouldn't impact the servers...that is client based.

Would it be possible, both for textures with full perms and other things, to make and store thumbnails on the user's computer?
