None of my searches have been very helpful. I suppose I could figure this out by trial and error, or I could find out faster by asking someone here!
Okay, when you set a prim's properties as "For Sale", you can set it to the object itself, a copy of it or the contents of it.
I assume that when you set it to "Contents", when you click on it and select "Buy" then everything in the Contents tab of the prim gets sold to you. This would explain why hovertext scripts sometimes wind up in my Inventory when I buy things.
Now, I'm a bit hazy on this part, probably because I don't shop much, but when you buy things like that, is a folder automatically created in your Inventory for it? Or do you have to put things in a folder first and put the folder in the Contents of the prim? And if you have to do that, are multiple folders possible? Or does that not work, which is why we have boxes that have to be opened first?
Please explain this to me, I feel stupid not knowing for certain.

It creates a folder in the buyer's inventory which is named after the object you sold the contents of.
The objects can't have folders in their content. Only inventory items.

It creates a folder that has the same name as the name of the prim/object you puchased from. So if the object is called 'Funky Doodad' then then you buy the contents, you get a folder in your inventory called 'Funky Doodad' which contains everything that was inside the object you bought. Yes, this includes hovertext scripts, notecard giver scripts, and anything else along those lines. It's usually safe to discard that stuff, some even have 'ok to discard' in the name.

(I've never understood why people leave the hovertext script in there, laziness I guess... it is a prim property and once it is set you can delete the hovertext script and the text remains above the box)

From: Kevyn Hienke (I've never understood why people leave the hovertext script in there, laziness I guess... it is a prim property and once it is set you can delete the hovertext script and the text remains above the box) I collected any script I got for the sole reason I didn't have a clue about scripting, last week I dumped about 60 hovertext scripts, but keep 3 because they were indeed different, now i need to go through all the 'give contents', 'rotate texture' scripts i have, but a lot less than 60

Thank you so much, everyone! Now things make much more sense. (And now I know I'd better pay attention to what I name my objects.) From: Kevyn Hienke (I've never understood why people leave the hovertext script in there, laziness I guess... it is a prim property and once it is set you can delete the hovertext script and the text remains above the box)
I was not aware of that, but that's handy to know. Thanks!

So I saves me time to leave it in because" 1. I don't have to remove the script. 2. I don't have to install a new script. 2. I dont have to retype the text. When you apply this to 60 or more vendor prims, it adds up.

Which then begs the question, Arch: shouldn't you just use a vendor, then, instead of having 60 scripts running because it's too tedious to delete them?

When you apply this to 60 or more vendor prims, it adds up. /me wonders how one changes the text without either installing a new script with the text already changed or typing the new text.... Now if it is more than a simple hover text script, one you can communicate with to change multiple vendors with one message, I understand. But I'm talking about the simple hovertext script that only makes one call to llSetText. Removing the text is simply a courtesy to the customer.

To the OP: The only dumb question is the one you don't ask.
OTOH, there is such a thing as a dumb answer...
