Well SL depends a lot on self learning, if you ask for help around you someone will answer anything you are stuck on as we all were learning the ropes not so long ago and most of us even after 18 months are still learning new tricks everyday.
A great way to get started is click SEARCH, then EVENTS tab, then EDUCATION for a list of free classes happening in the next few days, classes of other new and more seasoned residents here to enjoy learning. There's even a cool notify button that reminds you with a teleport prompt 5 minutes before a class starts. Also by joining groups like TUI, ASL & Rockcliffe University students, classes are announced on the group before they start. _____________________

I've learnt a lot from watching Torley Linden's video tutorials - my recommendation is to watch them - not all at once as it is a lot to learn - but pick particular topics and see if they can help you.
Feel free to ask specific questions on this forum too - there is always someone here who can help. _____________________

Once you've played with the standard system for customising your appearance, maybe you'd like to look for a more realistic skin or hairstyle. There are many good free ones available - so looking round freebie stores is a good pastime. Freebie Dungeon is one good place to try, there are several others.
Also learn about attachnments - like ponytails, jewellery etc. You can attach things to various parts of your body AND adjust them as well as wearing texture layers. Then I'd recommend finding a few regular haunts - dance clubs, that give you a sense of belonging in Second Life - an anchor, kind of thing. Learning to build and texture is very rewarding if you're a creative type. Sandboxes can be frustrating because of troublemakers but now you're allowed to rez stuff at up to 4096 metres, so you can make yourself a temporary platform in the sky where yo can work in peace. Eventually, having a piece of land where you can build a permanent home is worthwhile. Land in SL is cheap at present. _____________________

Try dropping by the Shelter, which you can get to at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Isabel/128/128/57 . The Shelter is a good place for new users to get help starting out.
Or try NCI, the New Citizens Inc. group, which has a number of locations, one being at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Kuula/128/128/25 . The Second Life Wiki has tons of info in it, that's at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Main_Page . Try using the search there. The so-called Creation Portal at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Creation_Portal might be one of the better pages for starting out at. The Second Life Knowledge Base at https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4417 is also full of useful info. There are some stickied threads at the top of this forum that you might find useful. _____________________

i would say that learning as much as you can about the menu bars uptop of your screen and all their functions is one of the most important things you would need for the long run..
like opening up the client server menu. (ctrl alt D) thats the letter D not the delete button this gives you two more menus at the top of your screen.. _____________________
