Just in the past week I've had a handful of occasions where textures suddenly turn black. Not the unrezzed grey we all know and don't love, pitch black.
The first time it happened, I had gone into Appearance mode and my skin turned black all over. It went back to normal when I left Appearance, but I went in and out of Appearance a few times and my skin would turn black in Appearance mode each time until I relogged. (Ok, it did look really neat, but I didn't pay a fantastic price for my skin to look like that.) As well, the sliders for Body were very strange; instead of pictures, the squares looked like grey gelatin.
Then, it started happened with the invisiprims on my shoes. The invisiprims on different shoes on different days will suddenly turn black. Sometimes it's just one one shoe and not the other.
Sometimes teleporting fixes it, sometimes I have to relog. And when the invisiprims turn black, so do three paintings (by the same artist) in my living room. The other paintings by other artists are fine, it's just those three and they don't have invisiprims, they are one prim pieces each textured with an rl painting.
I've cleared cache and I had no problem for a day, but it came back just now on an entirely different set of shoes and the same paintings.
I'm running on an old computer and I'm only just making the SL minimum technical requirements. I can't run most of the Windlight features as it is...
So, I'm wondering, is this an early warning signal of my imminent demise?
I'm using the 1.22.11 viewer. I tried the newer one but had too many problems with it, so I uninstalled it and went back a version.

I'm using the 1.22.11 viewer. I tried the newer one but had too many problems with it, so I uninstalled it and went back a version. I dont know if any of the following are related to your problem. But at various times in SL I have had similar problems. AVs or parts of AVs turning black most often for me happened when my computer had an ATI graphics card. No Fix had to live with it. Occasionally on a NVidea Avs or parts of AVs turned black. Go to a lagless sim, clear cache, rebake the AVs textures. (sometimes multiple rebakes. Worked about 85% of the time. Prim textures (sculpty, invisi or normal) usually were either a cache clearing situation or were a temporary SL glitch.

Thank you, Darkness. I guess I'll have learn to live with it until I can afford a better computer.
