Hey there,

First off so I dont lose your attention, heres an image (this always works on me). I dont think this is the normal complaint/question about bots so please bare with me. :)
http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/272/sillybotszr7.jpg

Two days ago I bought some more mainland in an empty sim, most of the land was all for sale. I constructed a building and started filling it up with my stuff. I drop 8-10 campers down in hopes of someone passing by needing some Linden and to help me boost my Traffic Rating.

I wake up in the morning to a Traffic rating of 5. Not bad, so I go to check my new spot out. I was kinda surprised to see all of the camper spots filled up by people dancing. Awesome I thought, things are looking up. Upon walking closer I realized they were all guys wearing dresses, or in the nude.

This is where it gets kind of fun. I saw all the spots filled so I figured what if someone comes by and they want to camp, so I drop another one down. Before the camper even got loaded up an avatar appeared on it & started dancing. This was a bit surprising, but what was even more surprising is that another avatar fell out the air onto the first one and shortly disappeared.

Note that these 2 avatars (1 still there) were not in this sim before I dropped the camper. Im still very confused on how they appear out of thin air the moment I drop a camper, and disappear in a heartbeat when they get off one.

-----------
Ok this is where it gets fun. ^_^
----------
I dropped like 10 campers and they all got filled up. O.O But wait.. they all got filled up before I allowed permissions for Linden to be removed from my account. So in the persuit of science & all that stuff, I went ahead and denied every single one. I then proceeded to shout at the Ruths about how they are dancing on broken campers. I invited a friend onto the land and we proceeded to drop 20 more campers out and laugh as they all filled up and danced on camp spots that WILL NOT pay out.

Right now I have a large amount of these Ruths dancing on my land for free and YOU CAN TOO. If you have a lot of camp spots and notice that they are indeed bots feel free to experiment with them Im not sure yet if they mind or not.

I guess my first question is, how long does it take for a Camping Bot to figure out they are dancing on spots that dont pay?

And secondly, whats up with the lack of effort put into making bots look normal?
Example this lovely young lady: http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/3439/sillybots2oc9.jpg

IM me InGame if you would like to check it out.

Be funny if someone complained you were exploiting camping bots.

Question 1:
Most well written bots can generally figure out right away if a chair or pad is on or off, and will leave almost imediately if it's not paying out.

Question 2:
At the moment the appearance command in libSL is borked, when the appearance command is issued, the shape loads, but the skin and clothing doesn't. Typically, on your end you'll see either the 'missing image' texture, or a blue and red checkerboard pattern. The latest beta version of testclient seems to work ok if the appearance command is called with a nobake switch. This will load the shape, making males appear to be male, but not attempt to bake the textures. So, if you log the bot account on normally, and get it dressed, you can log it on, then on with the bot, call the 'appearance nobake', and it'll appear with normal clothing and the proper shape.

Question 3:
Wait... only 2 questions were asked! I know, but I'm guessing alot of you are wondering how I know all this stuff, and the answer is no, I don't write bot scripts, as I'm not that well versed in C#. I do experiment with libSL though. The 'innards' of SL is interesting to me, how it all works, and it's fun to experiment a little... just for fun.

Hate to disappoint your, but a traffic rating of 5? Is really bad. Most likely it was produced by you hanging around and doing stuff, not by the bots. Some owners have noticed that bots do take your money but sometimes don't count against your traffic ratic.

I don't have any camping what so ever, I do promote free textures, and my average is around 100 traffic, but a bit of that is probably me too, those around me who have a couple of camp pads average traffic is about 500 for some, 2000 for others, but then again, they provide a community based chill out beach area, not all their count is camp pad related.

I not against camp pads on the whole, but really if your traffic is bad without camp pads, doesn't that say something about your site and/or service? (edit: this is generalisation, not specifically aimed at the OP, just making that clear)

Brilliant!!

How do bot farmers find the camping pads in the first instance?
If the process is blind like a landbot then:

1. Set up a camping area, with a notice warning that the pads do NOT pay out, and that the pads are intended for bots only.
2. If necessary in order to keep a bot's interest, set the pads so that they appear to promise payment but do not actually pay. !! Provide a notice to warn the non-bots !!
3. Make the avatars on the pads go through ridiculous animations
4. Spread the word

That might improve your traffic in a real way. You could attract a real audience for the bot animations. Yes, the bots are bots, but they would be contributing rather than taking.
Obviously, some restraint on the number of pads would be good so that you don't annoy others in the sim.

The whole idea would fall down if the bot farmers actually check out camping sites.
Sooner or later they realise that the money is not coming.
Presumably, the only way of detecting the trap is to visit the site or realise that the bots are not being paid.

Maybe there's a market for kits that people could set out for entertainment. The range of animations would be important here. A notice to the non-bots would be kind.
The kit would have to incorporate features that hid its own signature from automated checking by bots.

If the kits caught on and were in widespread random use, then the bot farmers could be faced with a significantly difficult job of weeding out the non-payers without committing their resources for at least a while.

People could have competitions. How many bots did you trap today? Set up picture galleries.

Downsides?
- Unrestrained continuous use of the kits could have an impact on neighbours
- The kits could be used by the unscrupulous. Removing the warning and not paying real campers.

Upsides?
- A whole new sport
- Trigger another need for advanced scripting techniques as bot-farmers engage in an arm race.

Ahhhh! Anothe nice coffee break :)

I love the Lorax :D

Take care of the bots! treat them with care!
Put camping pads on the land while we pay the tier
Give them free lindens and objects to hack
then the camping bots and all their friends will keep coming back :-)

Sorry...couldn't help myself, getting punchy...I haven't slept yet... o.O

Since the bots aren't actually "real" avatars.. can I use them to practice my melonshooter skills on?

Technically I suppose that the bots are Residents and protected by TOS and CS.

However. Notice: "By using this (pad) you give full consent to be shot at, subjected to indignities, used in a machine, dressed up, and generally abused for the entertainment of others."
That should cover it.

Yep set up a shooting range with 10 camppads at the end paying $1 per 10min and charge people $10 per 10min to shoot at them. :)

heh that was a joke. >.> Yeah it was at 5 because of what I was doing when I was setting up the place the day before. No matter what the traffic was I was still going to check the place out as it was going to be Day 2 and I needed to continue work on it. Main reason I mentioned it was just to illustrate that my place is brand spanking new, and yet a horde of bots found me. Yesterday my traffic rating was at 7,500 for this location. :)

-----------

Also a quick update, my dance pads are still full of someones bots. I think they just dance for the love of it, rather than the Linden anyway. Also all the dancing bots were moved outside of my building so that any actual visitors wouldn't jump on the pads.

What 'brand' camp pad are you using to lure them?

I was told by a Linden once that anyone in a damage-enabled area is considered "fair game" and you can legally shoot them/be shot at.
muahahaha
