Griefer Skin or Attachment?

A friend has recently joined SL, and has a problem. Somehow, I think she got tricked into putting something on, either a skin or an attachment. She has a clownish face and a totally horrid shape.

I had her "detach" and "take off" everything, but that didn't help. Next we tried having her wear a new skin and shape. It took, but after a few seconds the ugly returned all by itself! I've never seen anything like it.

I feel so bad for her, one of her first SL experiences has to be something like this. Any advice? This problem is beyond me, and searching here and Google didn't turn anything up.

I'm no expert at all, but I think the first thing I would try is go through my entire iventory and see what is lit up as being equipped or worn - seems to me it has to be something on her, but perhaps disguised with an innocuous name. Which is why I'd eyeball every single item in every single folder - the griefer object could be named "object" or "chair" or something equally neutral and be hidden in an unexpected folder.

Anybody more knowledgeable who could help?

If the shape is a short, misshapen female figure, she might just be being "ruthed." (A reversion to the early default avatar because her preferred shape and skin aren't loading correctly, which you probably already know.)

If it's only happened once, or on rare occasions, and sounds like it fits that description, that might be it and there's not much to do but maybe clear cache/relog and hope it clears.

If that's not it, though, then I'm not sure what else to suggest.

have your friend take off all clothes and also "Detach all"

then put on a shape and skin out of the library.

She should be not clownish at that point.

Then you can figure out what she was wearing that was cuasing the issue by dressing one item at a time.

It has to be a Prim object really - since you cant script skins and clothes.

Thanks for the quick responses. Colette, we did exactly as you suggested. Her new skin and shape was great looking, but by the time I could say "Ta-da!" the clown thing came back all by itself. Really wierd.

if you search "worn" in your inventory search bar you should get a list of everything her avi is wearing right then...maybe could find it that way?

I highly doubt that is necessary

To reset back to default avatar follow these steps:

1. Press CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+D on your keyboard.
(This will add new items to the menu at the top of your screen. You should now see "Client" and Server" listed there as well.)
2. Click on Client
3. Click on Character
4. Click on Character Tests
5. Choose a Male or Female Test.

You should now be dressed. You should also have access to your appearance editor.

Also try ctrl/alt/d to get the client tab on top of your screen. Then go to Character>Force Params to Default.

Very strange. She started a new account and the exact same thing happened again! After a few moments, she looks like she has kitty whiskers, a cyan neck and headband-- even her clothing changed to some wierd striped affair. And she swears she put nothing on. Bald as an egg when her new avy appeared.

On your computer do you see her avatar messed up? Or does she look normal? Is this problem on her computer only? I'm guessing her client and her video card are possibly messing up her textures which then get sent to the rest of SL via the baking process.

sounds like she needs a complete SL removal and re-install.

Make sure she deletes the entire cache folder in the Application Data area.

Bree, she looks that way to me and everyone else. I have never seen anything like this before. She uninstalled SL, re-loaded it, cleared cache, created a new account and it happened again. She better not be pulling my leg, but I don't think so. I know this girl.
