Might be a long shot. I am writing a dissertation on DECODE - The Icelandic Database and am looking for any Icelandic nationals who would be willing to answer a few questions on the subject. I can be contacted by PM on here.
Thanks for reading.

No I am not from Iceland, but because of the Columbus Day Holiday tomorrow, (in the US), it got me to thinking of the famous Icelander son Lief Erickson, and I spend and hour or so reading about him and the Greenland and the Vinland colonies online.
An interesting study, considering the 'Global Warming' issue, is how and why the Greenland colonies died out. Some have suggested that its because the Vikings would not adapt to changing climate conditions, or eat fish, which were plentiful. |

Gently proffers the theory that it was *extremely cold* and thus not ideal for colonisation. (see note 1)
Note 1: I'm not a scientist or anything. I just think it's insanely, ridiculously, awfully, letsgetouttahere COLD in that part of the world. And think the Vikings, after a few months, thought: "Forget this, let's go to France - they have women and alcohol there." _____________________

Knew it would be a longshot
. I could kick myself as I was in Reykjavik a few weeks ago, but like everything else I left deciding on my subject until the last possible second... |

I was there in there for about a year and a half when I was a kid in the mid 80's.. does that count?
Actually, it only snows when it's dark there.... and it gets dark real early for six months outta the year. Summers usually range into the mid 70's (at least it did when I was there) and that was considered hot. And to be honestly, most Icelanders are crazy. Fun.. but crazy. I really thought it was a wonderful place to live. _____________________

I imagine you have already thought of this, but sometimes the obvious eludes us:
http://www.google.com/search?q=DECODE+-+The+Icelandic+Database&sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1B2RNFA_en___US218 I would also go in-world and search for Iceland in All search- there may be groups catering to Icelanders- good luck. _____________________

Actually, at the Viking period of colonization of Iceland, the climate was much warmer in that part of the world than it is today. Greenland was also impacted by this mini-warm time. Following this was a mini ice-age. By the very early 1600's there was another mini-ice age (Shakespeare's winters were much colder and snowier than ours - there were ice fairs on the Thames) and another mini ice-age in Victorian England.

Thanks Amaranthim, yes I've already done a lot of research on DECODE, background, ethics etc. I've also joined a couple of Icelandic groups inworld.
Shame you weren't born there Raudf, but I agree it's a wonderful place. We visit often and given the right job opportunities would relocate. The weather there wouldn't be much change for us . My other half is learning Icelandic but I'm a bit behind on that! |

Could I interest you in some Icelandic mortgage-backed securities? Or would you prefer pork futures?
