I'm a (very!) novice builder and have had lots of fun over the last few weeks building easy houses and manipulating objects just to see what you can do with them! I'm not in business and my builds are not perfect - I can spend hours trying to line objects and textures together manually (textures take me forever, but that's because I'm no mathematics queen!).
I also spend a long time looking through my inventory for scripts and other items I can use on my new builds - basic stuff such as opening doors or darkening windows. On this subject, I wondered if it would be worth me attending a class for scripting (and other 'create' classes) as in truth I am not a bright spark (clever!) and don't want to rub my nose in that fact any further than necessary! Are any of these classes for 'remedial' peops like myself?
Mostly anything I have learned is through trial and error and reading a LOT of posts on this Forum (great place for simple answers!), but one day I'd like to truly build my own house without the use of other people's items/knowledge.
In short (finally!!) should I give a class a go or keep practicing until I feel I may have almost got the logistics of it?
TY all, Twirly

There are a lot of classes available to learn how to script and build. Just search the even tab under education. Most will say what knowledge you need before attending a class, and there are often novice classes available. I have attended classes and not found a bad one yet, all the instructors are patient and helpful, plus you are either given, free or for a small fee, all the textures and scripts you need for the build, so you can go away afterwards a practice.
Also there are tools you can buy for aligning prims and textures

There are so many great places to take classes from like <ASL>, the NCI Centers, Rockcliffe University, Dreams Classrooms and others. You can also look into hiring a tutor if you'd prefer. There are a number of kits and How-To books you can try your hand at too. Just take your time and don't freak when a piece goes zooming off into the air. We all have at least one thing floating out there in space, somewhere.

and once you get going the scripting forum (a few ticks down the forums list) is a very helpful place that loves people that want to learn...
and if you can do very basic algbra and geometry you'll go far (this from someone that failed trig... twice) and for the most part it's just basic maths.. as a bonus you'll probably find yourself learning a bit along the way. the biggest tax is on logic, figuring out the steps to make the script do what you want... after that it's just finding the commands to match your steps.

The short answer to your question is no.
A little maths is useful but even that isn't essential.

There are always a lot of VERY helpful (and patient) folks in the scripting forum that provide help and answers very quickly. I've had nothing but GREAT experiences using the forum! Thanks to all who have helped.

You don't need great math to script or build. Although you CAN build by eye, it helps to use some basic arithmetic, but no more than that.
In scripting, if you're making parts that move then rotations etc. can be troublesome, but not really because of the math, it's all just syntax. And there are little tools that will do the vector conversions for you.
And wow Cinders, I've never heard of a couple of those places! I should check them out!
