Wow, when my textures go AWOL, all I get is a lousy "Missing Image," image. Yours sounds more creative when they go missing.
Are you using a 3rd party viewer or do you have something worn to your hud?

It sounds a bit like a problem I had when I linked a texture to displaying a webpage, and the webpage appeared over all sorts of things, not just things with the assigned texture.
It's probaly noy the same as your problem but it could be a clue worth investigating.

when it happens try turning off shiny and bump mapping in graphics/preferences, this may help, you can turn it back on for shiny afterwards, if this removes or improves the situation it's likely to be the limits of your graphic card

There is a weird bug that creeped in a version or so ago that lets the default grey texture get replaced by a random real one. It doesn't happen often. It seems to consistently go away for me with just a relog, but a cache clear wouldn't hurt. (I kind of like the effect of getting wrong textures on things, so usually carry on and don't bother trying to fix it.)
