I am testing out how to set up a simple board to sell contents.
I create a box, make it look nice with a photo of the contents and then set For Sale, Price, and select Contents. (below I have next owner can modify, copy but I'm not sure it applies)
I place two items into a box. The box says "next owner can": modify, copy
I place this box inside the original vendor board.
My friend right clicks the vendor board and selects "Buy"
It shows the contents of the vendor board as being the box. However, the box says (no copy)(no modify)(no transfer). Ok, so I click on Buy. It says to my friend:
You paid Vikki $L for Dispenser. They get no item at all.
I get the message: XXXX paid you $L for Dispenser.
What am I doing wrong?

Check the permissions of the box, you need to be able to transfer the box.

Are the items within the box no copy/no modify?
Easiest thing to do is just create an empty box, don't put anything in it yet and then put that in your vendor and see if that works.

What do most large shops use - real vendor systems like hippo? Ultimately I'd like to be able to hand out a notecard/landmark on left click, but still have the right-click purchase option. I found a script that works but it started handing out the box that was inside the vendor board as well, so I had to remove that. Note: I did check both items inside the box, both are set to modify/copy but not resell. I will narrow it down though as you say and work backwards.

He wasn't asking what the next owner can do, he was asking what YOU can do. If you do not have transfer permissions on an object then, well, you can't transfer the object to someone else.
Do you have copy/trans permissions on the object (at least; full-perms would be mod/copy/trans)? Again, not what the permissions are set for the next owner, but what the permissions are for you.

It sounds to me like you have Mod/Copy/No Trans items inside a box which is Mod/Copy/No Trans, correct?
That outer box needs to have the following permissions: YES Trans.
However, you have to set the outer box's permissions from a right-click in either your inventory or your vendor prim's inventory because as soon as the box is rezzed, it picks up on the permissions of the objects inside.

What Jasmin just suggested, don't do that. That would enable customers to get infinite copies which they can give away to others. Your boxes should have the same permissions as the items inside.

Eeek ... good catch. I only ment to type YES Trans. I don't know where the copy part came from. Editing that now.
OP: YOU should have copy rights on everything. (I think that's where my brain came up with the copy instruction.)
----------------------------------
I was able to reproduce the error, though I'm not sure if this is what caused it on your end.
When the original merchandise was No Trans to me, it doesn't matter what I set for my next owner permissions because I can't transfer it. And I put it into a box that is Trans Only. Then it give no-everything permissions and won't sell to my alt.

If you're using a prim with a picture and having it set to 'Sell Contents', then I find it easier to just put the actual items you're selling directly inside.
Not another box that the person still has to rez on the ground and unpack.
This is how I have mine setup at least...
The person buys the contents, and then has a folder in their inventory with the actual items inside it.
It's also easier to make sure permissions are set correctly since it's not double boxed.

From: Vikki Svenska ...Ultimately I'd like to be able to hand out a notecard/landmark on left click, but still have the right-click purchase option... I use a script like that so that when someone buys a card I can give out Instructions notecards and the card for sale, but use the Touch option to let them hear the demo of the card's message. So if you want to have a different action on Touch, like I do, you need a script with the 'Money' event which will bring up the Pay option (rather than Buy) on right-click. It can then do something different on the 'Touch' event, like give out a notecard. However, although there are freebie versions of this script, they may not do exactly what you want so you'd need scripting skills to modify them. If the above sounds like double-dutch (I need more coffee , then I'd recommend sticking to the default 'Buy' facility for now.

What am I doing wrong? the vendor box permissions do not apply when you are selling the contents... when you box items to sell, the best way is to set the permission on the box, the same permission as the items you wish to sell (the box, make yourself so you have all permissions, the items if they are being resold, must have transfer permissions for you) when you say the box in the vendor says no mod/no copy/no transfer, is this what you see when you look at it, in the vendor box, or is this what your friend sees? If it is what you see, then it sounds like the item inside the box and the box have a combination that causes no permissions at all it is hard to actually know what you are doing because I am not sure if the permissions you speak of are next owner permissions or your own permissions If you still need help give me a shout, we can try some tests or go through it step by step

If you still need help give me a shout, we can try some tests or go through it step by step When I see the box and it shows no mod/no copy/no transfer, its my friend looking at the contents of the vendor (the box) just before they purchase. I guess I must have some confusion or be missing some permissions somewhere. Everything I can see myself shows copy/mode set to yes, and next owner can transfer/sell to no. This goes for the vendor, the box inside the vendor, and the products I created that were placed inside that box. Hmmm.... (what I'm testing with is a notecard and a shape to keep it simple) This is why I'm testing all this out way before I put up anything for sale I'm glad this might be helping people out. I might try get some screen captures tonight. I think high level steps are nice, but there are definitely more details in there and I think others would benefit as well. I may also ditch the box and sell the contents directly to avoid that added complexity. Thanks everyone for your thoughts so far! Once I get back online I'll do more testing.
