Permissions change

Anyone notice that some clothing and some objects have changed permissions in their inventory? I bought a freebie that had full permissions, now it's no transfer and I was hoping to use that item on a avatar we're making. I went back to double check the permissions it's full permissions alright.

Did you rez the item and then take it back and are looking at that new copy of the item? Some items will change perms in that case and I forget exactly why, but they don't seem to take on their true permissions until rezzed.

Yes, I had that happen with a vehicle today. The car said full perms, but when rezzed, edited a bit and then taken, it became no copy no mod. Those were the perms of the script inside it. Very annoying.

It was full permission freebie hair. She was wearing it when she went into appearance to Make Outfit. As soon as she saved it the full permission hair she said had became no transfer. So we went back and got the same hair but this time she included it in the contents of the cube and renamed it so it was fine then. The first box ALL the hair turned no transfer for some reason in her inventory.

Chalk it up to another buggy day in Slaggy Life I guess.

Actuallies it sounds like everything is working properly but not how you expect? ;) I know it's odd, but as LittleMe said, perms don't "bake" until the item is rezzed. That's how many freebies come to be, when the creators don't realize that.

To solve that problem, only ever change perms on items rezzed inworld. If you do it in your inventory, it won't "take" until the item is rezzed, so if you sell or give it to someone else, it will appear full perm at first and they can even give copies away (until they take back a rezzed one which finally gets the perms set properly).

I guess it's because our inventory isn't the item but just a name of the item or something like that?

Don't worry, most people don't understand it, I even tried going to one of those classes to try to learn about perms only to be given a notecard, which I read through and didn't give any more details, so I asked the supposed "instructor" who responded after a while "did you read the notecard?" Um, yes! Turns out the "instructor" didn't know either!

This might be different? You may still be able to mod your car if it's not the same "baking" issue as above. Items in inventory show the most restrictive permissions, NOT all the elements perms.

So because a script or anim or sound or texture in it has less perms, that's what is shown when it's in inventory. BUT! :) If you rez it in world, the object itself is probably fully modifiable!

So you can't rename it when it's in your inventory, but can if you rez it in world and rename it or make other changes there! ;)

Thanks Crystal. I am going to save this explanation because I always forget the specifics -- all I know is that it happens.

Well put, Crystal. I've been burned many a time by that myself.

Just to clarify: if you're making something and are about to transfer it or drop into a vendor, do as Crystal says and set perms inworld.

As a consumer, if you have a full-perm worn item (prim clothing, hud, hair, etc) and want to do anything to it, copy it first (in your inventory), and work on the copy.

In general (whether worn item or not), if it's no-copy but is mod, don't be too alarmed if you edit it and take it back into inventory and now it says no-mod. *something* in it is no-mod, but you haven't "frozen" the item entirely.

And if it becomes no-xfer, it means that something inside it was no-xfer. Sorry, you can't use it in your product or freebie giveaway, unless you find the no-xfer contents and remove them. (Ditto for no-copy, except there's a workaround, but it's a hassle, and you shouldn't anyway -- unless you find the no-copy contents and remove them.)

Finding the stuff in contents can be tricky for things like hair, since there are so many prims and it could be in any (or all) of them. Edit Linked Parts, and learn selection tricks!

Clear now? ;)

The original has full perms in inventory, but when rezzed, edited and taken, it takes on the restricted perms of the script. It's the "no copy" that is the biggest pain as it's a vehicle, so I have to either look after it very well, or re-edit it each time I rez the original (it needed the sit location changing).

There are times I have seen it, my friend has experienced it when setting up vendor items that permissions for whatever unknown reason will change all by themselves.
Weirdest glitch was when creator field changed.
