Hi Does anyone know how long you can make a single IM in-world? I know there is a cap on the number of IMs to send at once, but how about length?
It's sometimes convenient to leave a message for someone via IM, even though they are offline. Especially if such IMs are forwarded to email. But what is the limit for this?
B.

I don't know, but I'd guess that it's 256 characters, or a few characters less than that. I'm pretty sure it's more than 128 characters.

Big correction: it's 1023 characters.

The best way to send someone a really long message is to put it on a notecard and give them the notecard. It's easier to read for them, they can save it and come back to it if they're too busy to read it right away, and it's easier for you to edit (IMO). You can also stick attachements in notecards like photos and things.
1023 characters is a lot. I've sent a few long IMs since it's usually how I do ratings, but I've never even come close to 1023.

Problem with the notecard is that you can't see what is in the notecard in an e-mail, only that someone sent you something (and the cap thing). Problem with IM is that you can lose the information in the IM if you are not logging it, and/or do not have it set to be sent to e-mail; and/or have IM capped and SL is messed up, and even though you have it sent to e-mail, the IM doesn't go through.

Why not send shorter ones? If they are sent right after one another, they get combined into one email... I disagree about sending a notecard, which is both lost when IMs cap and how would the recipient know you've sent them one? The recipient email only says so and so "has given you inventory in SL. Log in to accept or decline" or something like that, while an IM says what you want to say!

From: Phil Deakins Big correction: it's 1023 characters. Unless you use a character set like Japanese and then it's less.

notecard length limit?

A related question that doesn't seem to merit its own thread: is there a length limit on notecards?

I like park benches, alley ways and those cute little shop fronts, also. BUT seriously believe that short messages are much beter than watching your acquaintance/partner/etc fiddling away in empty space and coming up with some inane comment about the price of eggs.
