Can I build on someone elses land and if so, how?

I built a nice house on a parcel that I sold to my best friend a while ago. I sold it so that he got to keep all the work I'd already done.

He asked me to help him build but everything I created was returned to me 1 minute later. I realized it was the autoreturn feature, but then we noticed that if that was turned off, the objects I created on his land were still mine and took away from my prim count for my own land even though they would remain on his.

Do I have to "sell" him every prim I create?

How can I help him build while making the prims I create effectively his prims?

that's odd!

a good way to build collaboratively is in friends menu, next to each others' names, click "can edit my objects"

To build on someone else's land you either need them to turn the auto return off, or set up a group on it with you a member and set the land to group build only.

Once you have finished building the house, you need to link the prims in as few pieces as you can and set each part for sale so your friend can buy it all.

I would also set the prims to mod/copy/no transfer, that way they can't sell the house themselves later.

Just experimented with that using a single block prim and it's nice to know that I can create and offer items with certain restrictions. :)

This part sounds odd... If an object is counting against the prim count of your land, then it must be rooted on your land. The owner of the object doesn't matter, just its location.

Is this parcel you sold your friend right next to a parcel you still own? If so, try turning on viewing of parcel borders (under the View menu), and then edit one of the objects that counts toward your prim count. The yellow-outlined prim in a link set is the root prim, and if its center is still over your land, then it will count against your prim allotment.

This could also explain why the objects did not transfer to your friend with the land purchase. Other possibilities are (a) if you didn't check "transfer objects with land sale" in the land sale window, or (b) the items you built contain a prim, script, or something that is not transferrable, making the entire linkset non-transferrable.
