Av skin is showing a darker color from the neck up than the rest of the body. It is not a part of the skin coloring itself since it has long shown the same basic coloring throughout. I think it occurred after trying on different skins. My thought was simply to rebake textures, but that has no effect. Any ideas how to fix it?

Try a clear cache. Loads up new textures that way. All else fails, do a charactor test to revert to a newbie form and skin, then start over.

Could it be due to Nvidia Driver incompatabilty with the upto date SL viewer?

Could try the Advanced Menu> Rendering>Features>and uncheck Palletized Textures. Then rebake and look, problem is you have to do it every time you login.
