I'm new, and i can't figure this out! when i right click on an object i own and select edit i see how many prims it is. when i do the same with other's objects there's no prim count - how can i buy stuff if i don't know if it'll fit prim-wise? am i doing something wrong?

Tools > Select Only My Objects. Make sure that's un-checked.

Under tools you might have select only my objects checked. Uncheck that and it should work.
