Hi, Yesterday I noticed that my friend was not online (according to my Friends List). I needed to send her a LM to a great skin store, so I sent an IM first to let her know that I was dropping a LM on her profile. The strange thing was, when I sent the IM it did not inform me that she was offline. A bug, I thought. I then dropped the LM onto her profile, and I got the blue pop-up dialog that said she had accepted the inventory!!! I then sent another IM, saying, 'Strange, you do not show up on my Friends List as being online. Are you there?' No reply. I then dropped two more landmarks, both of which were declined!!! Today I phoned her at work (she is a RL friend too), and she confirmed that she was NOT online during that time. So, how did inventory get accepted and declined, if the avi was not online?? SL is getting weirder and weirder Vi

If you get an inventory accepted or declined message, or no response at all, it means they're online but they've set their online status to be hidden from you.

My avatar was stuck online all day yesterday and I did not know about it. No offline messages to my email either. When I tried to log in multiple times, I got the "your account will not be available until..." message. Contacted Concierge and they restarted the region my avatar was stuck in. Its a possibility that this also occurred to your friend.

While there could be a technical reason why this happened, or a security reason such as a hacked account - there's also a social reason:
Many people (myself included) mark their status as 'Offline' from their friends on their friends list - not because of anything personal, but because they need some privacy.
Before this feature was available, I can't tell you how many times I'd try to sneak a quick 5 minute login from work, to get something really important quickly done. Before my client would even finish loading, I'd have IMs queued up from online friends wanting to chat. This made it really difficult for me to quickly login without having to go through some long explanation with my friends that I was at work, and no I couldn't talk right now - especially when they thought what they needed to share with me was really important.
With show-offline status, I can login from work, and fix a broken script, or quickly pass someone some inventory that needs it - and then immediately log back out without causing problems for myself at the office. I will say though - on the few times I get 'caught' offline now - it does create a briefly awkward situation trying to explain why I don't show as available. Perhaps your friend was in a similar situation?

If I remember correctly, there's an "automatically accept" feature for notecards or such...
...so if your friend was ghosted - i.e. logged out but the avie is still in world - then the ghosted avie may have accepted, then been logged out by the inventory accept. (giving inventory is one way to make a ghost disappear) the next item give would then get the offline message.
*edit - if this was the case though, the second item wouldn't have been declined.

SL is getting weirder and weirder Vi Regardless of what your friend says, there are too many things that do not add up here. You did not get the 'person is offline' message when you IMd them, you did not get the 'person is offline, inventory will be stored' message when you sent them inventory. The first inventory item was accepted but the other ones, after you IMd them again, were declined. If the avi had been ghosted, none of the inventory would have been auto-declined. Whether they wish to admit it or not, my money would be on the fact that they were online but had unchecked the box to allow you to see them online. BTW - Another way to check this in the future is to look at the member list of any group they belong to (if you are also in that group) to see if that lists them as being online.

iirc, you can't truly hide from anyone in your friends list. You can decline giving them notice of your logging in and out, but if you're online, you're online and they can see that with your name being bolded in the list.
I do this for most people. Only a few get to see my coming online/offline. Chances are, the server was borked and it thought that person was offline.

you could check your transactions? Sadly, it turns out that answer B was the answer. The reason I did not see her online was because, if I had looked more closely, was that I had been removed from her friends list. I wont go into the reasons for all this, it just disgusts me. But I thought I would let the forum know the answer to the original question. Vi

All this time and I didnt know that Cristalle...learn somethin new all the time. Interesting, so if they dont have it marked...they'll still show up bolded when on. How simple.

I could be wrong, but that's just how I remember it. As far as I know, you can't truly hide from anyone. I didn't think that that option had any teeth. I mean, why put people in your friend list and then hide from them? If it's more than notifications, that's something.

Sorry to hear you were off the list. But yesterday online status was pretty borked as well. I had a couple of people send me IMs that told them I was offline. I wasn't busy or marked as offline. They even saw the "Chris Norse is Offline" pop up, like I had logged out.

That will happen if you are in the middle of a teleport when you get the IM. But at the time yesterday, I was standing still.

I didn't think that you appear bolded in the list if your online status is hidden. I have always used the group method to tell when people are online and hiding, but I'm pretty sure when I have found someone like that they were not bolded on my list.

There was a bit of a bug on this a while back -- before my current old version of 1.18.5.3 -- but it has been since corrected (though always possible that it is back in a newer version). The way it is suppose to work: If they do not have you checked to see their online mode, they will never be bolded in your friends list and their Calling Card will not indicate that they are online and (if you do not have View Admin Options clicked) you will not get the option to Offer Teleport via their profile - though this last one might also have to do with the option of "only allow my friends to see my online status". However, you will still see them listed as online in their groups whenever they are online - no way to change that at all.
