SAM Broadcaster?

Okay so I think renting a stream is for suckers and big time clubs. I use to use JetCast and was simple enough to get stream to SL using just my IP or a no-ip url and I still do. But now I like the features of SAM and I wanna do some bigger stuff, so how do I use my copy of SAM to broadcast in the same simple manner I did for my jetcast. If I can do it in one application there has to be some way I can route the server through my IP or no-ip url. I don't need advice on how "streams support more listeners and higher quality" or "you shouldn't do it that way, it's easier to rent", I don't fork out money for anything I know I can do myself so I just learn how to do it, and since SAM is pretty much a program with no help on how to do anything, I need help. Anyone successfully done this? Something about setting up the encoder? I have icecast, how do I get that to work? What should master IP, port, all that be? Let me know, thanks! If you help me get it working, I'll tip ya for it :-). Thanks! You can IM me in game too. Ravenis Black

As long as you have a broadband connection or leased line with at least 1.5mb upstream bandwidth you can get around 12 concurrent listeners. Downstream bandwidth does not count. As most broadband offerings are asynchronous - meaning your download bandwith is far greater than upstream.

If you have less that this, you will be looking at a maximum of 2-3 concurrent listeners (assuming you are not uploading anything else at the same time).

Sam broadcaster is a tool to create a stream - the server then shares that stream. In order to share the stream, each listener takes a SEPARATE stream from the source (in your case your home connection - in the case of using a "proper" server, a dedicated datacentre with plenty of bandwidth). That's why people say rent or use a dedicated streaming server.

Of course, as you say you can do it yourself, you must have the bandwidth?

even if you do have enough bandwidth, too many concurrent upstreams from your home connection may adversely affect how SL operates in terms of client updates to the server, there will be severe lag and the common "rubber band effect".

Okay, I guess I didnt have to be so harsh since I AM asking for help :-P. Okay so, it's a different type of application you say? Because I've hosted 40 person parties using jetcast and everyone could hear the music fine.

True they have that but every turn on their help page is like "To setup SAM.. Rent a stream!" ... "To make SAM run, rent a stream!" ... "If you want a radio station... Rent a stream!" "Give us money, give us more money!" :-P

Maybe you missed the point, then - SAM is not server software. It is a mixer/broadcaster. It is not the Shoutcast/IceCast/whatever service that provides the streams. Telling you to rent a stream should be a clue that that is not part of SAM's capabilities.

I believe that you would have to find a seperate shoucast broadcaser to run on your local machine WITH SAM, then have SAM stream to your locally running broadcaster, then people link to your stream as they did in your previous software.

Maybe you can stream from SAM to jetcast? Or does it not take streams from outside itself and rebroadcast them?

look into both shoutcast (server) and icecast as solutions, both are free, both can be run from your home computer, and both work well with SAM... you'll need to reconfigure SAM to send it's output to the server on your machine, most easily by using the loopback ip address plus the port, and folder/file name

127.0.0.1:<port number>/<rest of the server incoming url>

then set up your server to serve from your actual IP, or the dynamic dns (what you were calling a no-ip url).

I use SAM and shoutcast. Works great. You can IM if you have questions of how I'm doing it.
