I once tried some beta download that gave me a pop up even when I was not logged into SL when my friends came online. - Anyone know where to get that?

I don't know of one that notifies you, but if you have a Mac, Sweet Vitriol has a Dashboard widget that will tell you which friends are logged on. If you switch to your Dashboard frequently, this would be helpful.
