I'm new... Poked around in the Wiki, the Knowledge Base, the Forums, and the Internet. Hope this is the right forum to ask this question.
Can't find a definitive answer to a question.
Is it possible to build a 3D object in 3ds Max -OR- Maya -OR- some other 3D Editor - Save the object to file - THEN upload the object file in to SL??
Notice I did not say edit the object once it is in SL. Just upload it?

Hi 9mm, SOME object files with very specific characteristics can be translated into a Second Life "sculpty". Realistically, a object has to be created from the start with these characteristics in mind (restricted topologies, and a specific number of polygons). Further reading is here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Sculpted_PrimsAfter that, you might want to pop over to the building forum where there are a fair number of threads on this (including tutorials on how to use the various exporters).

Yes, but not in the way you're thinking. SL uses its own proprietary modeling system. You cannot import arbitrary 3D models, only ones that are built in very specific ways. Basically, there are two options. You can use plugins for third party modeling programs to imitate SL's modeling system, or you can make sculpties. For an example of the kind of plugin I'm talking about, take a look at http://www.simtools.jp/sltk/en/index.php . To learn about sculpties, go to http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Sculpted_Prims.

Hmm - "Sucpty" didn't see that one coming.
I had read about that the SL Modeling system is different (proprietary). Will look into your tips. Thanks.
