Helping a friend who cannot log off?

I have tried to search for anything that matches this question to no avail, so I will ask here.
Just met a person from Italy who says that he is always showing as online to his friends, also the same for his alt account. I remember seeing something about this before and would sure like to help him with an answer....any suggestions?
Tried the ritualistic clearing cache....updating to the new browser etc, should he try to totally uninstall and then reinstall the new client perhaps?

I think I read something about ghost av's, although I think they show as offline but the av is still in world unbeknown to it's owner

Yea, that was maybe the one i saw as well. He did say that his friends would see him as a "ghost". Kind of interesting in a way, we all have the issues with logging in and he has issues logging off lol!

The presence server screws up all the time. I wouldn't worry about it. There's nothing to be done at the user level.

best solution and I know it works as I get stuck in constellation a bit :/ but anyways besides that have him im his main account and start paying it lindens, once you get enough it basically overflows the buffer and the server picks it up and kicks you out..

I saw this a little time back. A girl was stood, frozen, in the middle of my sim. I IMed her, and she politely replied that she was not in my sim, she was at home!

Eventually, she arrived in my sim to be amazed at the sight of a clone of herself, frozen. We did an experiment or two. We friended, and when she logged off the frozen avi remained, and she still showed as being online!

The bottom line was, there was a problem in the sim software, not having purged correctly, producing this ghost avi that would always show as being as online. I restarted my sim, and that solved it.

So, my advice is, try to get the sim rebooted where this avi friend of yours was, just before this problem first appeared.

It's not rare for me to have such ghosts in my store. I haven't heard of the paying money trick before, but the quick answer for me has always been to have the sim restarted.

No no, you have to find the Key to the Twilight and wake up the little girl. They they can log out.

There was a ghost avatar hovering above the hedge at the end of my garden. After establishing she was a ghost, I IM'd the 'real' avatar who came over to the sim I live in and the ghost disappeared.

Log off! NOW!!!!

On topic, I agree with Chosen that there probably isn't anything you can do about it. Usually ghosts don't show as online, and they vanish when the "real" avatar returns to the sim. If that's not happening, then there isn't anything more you can do, aside from possibly trying a sim restart.

There are a couple of things you can do to help "nudge" the avatar offline. Sending repeated IMs or payments of L$ sometimes works.

If the ghosted avatar is on a private estate (not Mainland) the estate owner can do a re-boot of the sim which will knock the avatar offline. This is an easy task that can be done in a minute or two.

If the ghosted avatar is on mainland then he'll have to wait for Linden Labs to do a rolling-restart, which can happen anything between once a week, and once in a blue moon. If it was me, and on mainland, I'd just start from scratch with a new alt while I was waiting.

There was an avi stuck in the alley behind my aprtment last week. At first I thought he was a peeper, but he as in the same spot for like 3 days. IM'ed him a few times, no response. I went out to him, and tried to chat with him no response. So I gently pushed him out of the alley , into an open area, tried to talk to him again, still nothing. Sooooooo...I was feeling a bit mischevious and used him as a practice subject for my Mystitool. I spent a good while bouncing and finally orbiting him.....

my partner was ghosted and I tried and tried finaly got a sim restart.. but the orbit used to always work...mine just dont at all!
