Update: It's done! The Virtual Parks & Recreation Service is now operating the Nautilus Harbor free public boat launch! ======================================= I am tiering down and need to let go of my free public boat launch, Nautilus Harbor. I could just sell it, but I would rather donate it to an organization that will keep it open for free use by the public. The question: Who might be willing to adopt Nautilus Harbor? I have already contacted NCI and The Shelter, neither of whom can take it. The Virtual Parks & Rec Service appears to catalog recreational sites, but not actually hold any themselves. I've also checked the SL Sailing Federation website, but they don't appear to hold land either. Nautilus Harbor is a 1024 plot, so doesn't require much tier. It's in the SW corner of Salerio (0,0), directly bordering a collection of about 10-15 protected Linden ocean sims in the Nautilus continent. I've kept the floating dock fairly light on prims, so there are over 100 prims that people can use to launch small to medium sized boats. (The dock is custom built, so I can include that full-perm for the next owner.) There is also a launchpad for aircraft up in the sky, and I keep a box of simple freebie boats available there at the dock, so new residents can enjoy boating quickly and easily. So, if anyone knows of an organization or even a very reliable individual who might agree to take the boat launch and keep it open for public use, please let me know. Just to be clear, I am talking about donating the land, not selling it, but the recipient must provide the 1024 tier themselves. Thanks, - Ava

Could the Cartel use some of its tier reserve? Also, try the Arbor Project. Contact Xerses Goff.

Ava, I have an extra 1024 tier allowance. In case you don't find someone to carry on the pier, I'd be more than happy to do so. I'm a boat enthousiast as well, and I already own a pier in Nautilus (Bonzo) and another one in Corsica (Duzzclown).

It'd be great PR if the Lindens would step in and make it protected common land with autoreturn and rez on.

Yeah, but if they were interested in that, they would just put little launch areas in the Linden land (oceans, roads, waterways) during continent construction. It's a real shame that they don't. My experience has been that it requires no management as long as the launch parcel has a short return time (the Linden standard 5 minutes would be fine). Cal, I may take you up on that. I'll get back to you after I've explored the group thing more thoroughly.

Sounds like a nice JIRA proposal....

Ava, I just learned that the SL sailing federation has its own forum: http://slsailing.org/forum/I am going to join. Would you like me to post this for you there? I'm betting a resident on the forums there would be happy to take it over, but it might be more stable if one of the sailing clubs took it over. Unlike RL sailing clubs, I believe ALL of SL's sailing clubs are free to join, open use spaces. I certainly know that I can toss a boat off of Starboard's or Mowbry's own docks, and they might welcome auxiliary launch places like this as well.

I just sent Ava an IM in-world. I have some tier that isn't going to be used any time soon. I'll be happy to keep the launch open for public use.

Ava, if you haven't resolved this yet, try SL Public Land Preserve.

I certainly know that I can toss a boat off of Starboard's or Mowbry's own docks, and they might welcome auxiliary launch places like this as well. Thanks Nika, please do. I should probably make it clear that the offer to DONATE the land stands for high profile public-service groups, or to individuals who are stable active residents with a visible record of providing land for public use AND that I feel I can reasonably trust. I specify this because I'm getting private messages from people I don't know offering to take it off my hands for free. Unfortunately I simply can't trust just anyone in this matter, because once I transfer the land the person could make it their own private parcel or even just turn around and sell it for a nice little profit. This is why I'm hoping to find an organization that I can be reasonably sure will keep the boat launch open, and in the event they do need to sell, would use the proceeds to support other programs to benefit the public. ETA: Just so you know, that last part wasn't at you Kathy... I didn't even see that until after I posted. I will check with the other suggestions just provided... looks like I will have a busy weekend!

From: Raymond Figtree Ok. Let me know if it gets dangerously low and I can drop some tier to the group. It's kind of cool watching new groups form friendships, pull together, rise up and do amazing stuff. You are small but strong, then stronger, then more people join with you so you gain more influence... soon you can really make a difference in the world. And from what? Seriously, not a lot more than forming friendships in forums. Of course, evils come with that. Inside deals, cronyism, all that cool stuff! We all know absolute power corrupts absolutely. But it also rocks absolutely... I miss the forum crew of 2003-4. Not many left. You guys are gonna be the new FIC. But wow is it tamer these days. Some of the early forum talk could kill a kitten with one post back then.

Hi,
If you are interested in relocating, I'd be happy to host it for you. I have some open space regions have been recreational use for a few months to date.
I could host the build and you keep ownership of the objects - or you could transfer the objects to me -- your choice (I just need to invite you to the land management group if you want to retain ownership).
You can probably find open space regions on your own but I can send you an LM in world - just IM.

Thanks to everyone who's offered help with tier etc., but I'm really looking to transfer ownership. I thought a lot about donating to another individual, but I've decided against it for the reasons stated above and others. If someone is REALLY interested in it, I will consider selling it below the base market price on the condition that you allow me to announce it here... just to give you a little peer pressure to keep it open. I still need to check with Prok to see if the Public Land Preserve is interested. If anyone can think of another established group that might be interested, let me know. I plan to sell the boat launch property in early December if I don't find someone to adopt it, so if you're interested in boating/sailing/flying the inland sea of the Nautilus continent, go enjoy it while you can!

Very interested in preserving the land....
11-18-2007 04:50
Hiya Ava, I have sent you an IM and a notecard outlining my interest in your land. I do hope you will take the time to read it, as I tend to be long-winded....lol Though I have only been in SL for a year and have a small business, I have much experience and knowledge and my groups do as well. We (partners and groups) are well-established and have a very good reputation. We know land very well and we are always looking to help make SL a better place... My groups are involved in various projects and sponsorships....membership in my groups is by invitation only, as I look for serious individuals with the same goal(s). ugh....told ya I was long-winded. Anyway, give me a shout if you are interested. Take care, Pink

For those wanting to learn more about Virtual Parks & Rec, please check out their web site: http://virtualparksandrec.com/ Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions, and a great big thanks to Higbee!
