New Business: Tips? X Street SL Tips?

I am thinking about starting a business and would like some time saving tips especially. (The types of things that you might've learned the hard way but if you'd known would've saved you tons of time/effort.)

I would also like to know some basic tech tips.

Things like -

How do people get more than one pic with their item on X Street SL? How do they make those product pictures (for the product page) that keep changing the pic like a slide show?

How do you make a landmark 'stick' - i.e. if I pass out a landmark to a skybox the person lands on the ground. I take a teleport or a landmark to skybox shops all the time and land IN the skybox. And I'm not a member of their group having never been there before. So how does one make the landmark stick where it should?

Any other little handy dandy tips are appreciated. (I am thinking of making cheap low prim houses, to start...but I'd also like to make other things.)

Do you find having a targeted 'brand' helps or is it okay to have a bit of everything in the shop?

For the teleport thing, you may have a landing point set on the land that will force anyone teleporting in to a specific point. You can either set the landing point to be in the skybox, or change the land to allow people to TP anywhere, which would make the landmark work properly.

Adding multiple pics to an item is easy. Just load them one by one in the edit screen. The changing pics are most likely animated files (*gif)

If possible, make sure your skybox is below the 'old' building limit of 768 meters to reduce the risk of people landing on ground level. And offcourse as mentioned above, check your landing point and settings.

think about how you may get bitten in the ass later on and do whatever you can to minimise those risks in the beginning. things like store location (pg or zindra), store sims future (estate or mainland), product updates (update script or group), demos (temp rez, model homes) etc.
im sure there are some pitfalls particular to the prefab.
use rez-foo rather than a cheap copy :)

as far as the landmark goes, make sure you set_ the parcel landing point to the sky box. in fact this goes back to my earlier comment regarding forethought. initially our products had a button in the menu called 'visit store'. the button delivered ppl to the location of the landmark in the products inventory. today i must ensure that the spot that old landmark leads to is always a part of the store parcel, and must manipulate ppl to a landing point, which causes them to see a red beacon in the yonder. now the script reads the location from a db, but that does nothing to change the fact that thousands of freebies have that old landmark in them, and theres no way to go back and fix that.

I'm just starting too, it's slow and hard to muddle through, but I like it.

What do people think are good permissions for products they make to sell?

Yep I had read most of that thread Amaranthim but it is GInormous - and most of what I need for now are just the little things. Not so much the tweaking of what already is there.

IIRC there was a fair amount of *gasp* off topic stuff in that thread too. But thanks for the reminder. :)

Nina - yes that's the type of thing I'm trying to avoid or get tips on. Things like, skybox rezzers, is there one I can include with it that is full perm and easy to use?

How to let people see the homes/skyboxes - what is a good temp rezzer?

I tried uploading more than one pic to the X Street SL ad but it just replaced the first one. :(

Thanks all, please keep 'em coming and good luck also to Ian.

XStreet has a "add another image" thingie- i never had a problem with it -

I used Rezz Faux I think on my Rainforest World- worked a charm.

I have not used a temp Rezzer in ages but will look up what it is next time inworld

The LM thing someone else answered -

I have no idea how the slide show thing works but will watch for the how if someone posts it.

Here's a basic one: If you want to start a business, make sure you bring something new and original into it. Don't resell freebies or resellers goods at hillarious prices.

Apart from that: Customer support, customer support, customer support. Make it easy for them to reach you, be friendly (even with the assholes), be generous, be cool. Reply to their problems, offer to show them stuff if necessary, etc. etc.

My biggest tip is use the bulk perms option in the RC... it is a life saver.

Beyond that create a template for your ads to use. It saves time and makes you look a lot more professional
