safest way is just drag them from your inventory to their open profile, or an IM that you are in. You can drag the items directly onto their avatar, but it's easy to miss.
the items have to be transferable of course.

Along that line, I'd like to be able to leave a notecard (or letter) sitting on a table in a private place that is shared by just the two of us...is there any way to do this? I think it would be a little more personal than my normal way of just dragging it to her profile. I guess I'm looking for some kind of "mail box", maybe. Thanks, all.

Hi Jack - I'm not very proficient at this stuff, but if, as you indicate, it is in a place that's just shared by the two of you...you could either a) get a card inworld, and write in it, or b) you could write your note and upload it as a texture, and put it on a flat prim... and then prop it up, like a letter...

A friend of mine just opened a really cool card shop on El Sacromonto Liberation sim....
A card might be the best way to go if you want to keep it truly private because even if you apply a texture to a prim and leave it somewhere laying out so they can read......there's still the possbility that others can poke around with camera zoom and find it. I'm not saying it WILL happen....but not knowing where this is taking place......if it's a very busy area with lots of people about and/or lots of activity....it could be a risk factor.
Even in quiet residential areas there's always the possibility of someone snooping about with their camera (personally I could care less, but privacy IS important and in SL sometimes it's tricky to maintain)

Hi, Mo. I didn't even know you could get cards in world..The things you learn! Thanks (and also to Milla for the pointer)! Jackie

You could make an "envelope" prim with a notecard in it and a script like this: default { touch_start(integer i) { if (llDetectedName(0) == "Tali Rosca"  { llGiveInventory(llDetectedKey(0), "Name of notecard"  ; } } }
