But your correct about the age of the thing. It is purported to have been floating around since before the popularization of monotheistic religions. Which makes it a little hard for any of the majors to claim. Not to say that over time some of those within them have not tried to co-opt it. There are all kinds of variations of interpreted meaning. The central one seems to be wisdom. Eye seeing - perception, Hand doing - action, acting on information. To a more sublime level eye equaling Omniscience and the hand representing Omnipotence. Teva has a similar logo and I think it may predate SL's use of it:
 I have a book called Design Motifs of Ancient Mexico by Jorge Enciso that shows a sketch of a similar image but I don't have a scan of it. _____________________

If I remember correctly, the official explanation for why the Lindens chose the eye-in-hand symbol for SL was because one of its typical meanings is the meeting of imagination with reality. The eye envisions and the hand builds, the eye observes and the hand interacts, the eye sees and the hand touches, the eye perceives and the hand feels, that sort of thing. As SL was intended to be a place where one could do, make, or be whatever one could imagine, the symbolisim is a perfect fit.
LL can't lay claim to all variants of the symbol, of course. But they do hold a trademark on their own unique variant of it. _____________________

the design is actually pretty common in several cultures and draws a lot on primitive (by historical origin) art work. they'd have a hard time combating it's use in the real world unless it was marketed with a specific relation to virtual worlds or SL directly. I could just see LL going after some religious marketer and it becoming another Microsoft vs MikeRoweSoft type case... without the suitable ending...
