one could say Hands has the cash to start a 'third life'

"It is the latest step in a wide-ranging restructure by Hands since he paid £2.4bn for EMI last year."

"EMI owner Guy Hands will be hoping that his latest hire will convince consumers to start paying for music again."

Does this imply that it wasn't Cory's idea to have free accounts in SL ?
;)

Wow, talk about Gabriel getting in bed with Lucifer.

Hands wants Ondrejka to help "get consumers to pay for music again" (as if people really ever stopped "paying for music" -- we're all still paying for it through the nose). The very same Ondrejka who came out against DRM and copyright protection technologies at LL. The very same "long-haired liberal 'communist' views" that the record labels have been fighting against for years.

Some really interesting shenanigans at play here, methinks.

Cory: Hey Philip, don't you think it's time we develop SL2?
Philip: No, let's milk SL for all it's worth.
Cory: I quit.
Philip: Ok, Bye.

Major labels have failed to integrate digitally, so why not hire a CTO that built a closed-ended virtual world that has spent 2 years in stagnation?

I feel cynical today. so sue me.

devils advocate play: i think EMI was the first label to remove DRM on apple iTunes Store, so i guess they get a couple grams of credibility

The interesting part I find in the article is the first pairing of google and secondlife even if by proxy.

Good for Cory. The last paragraph was interesting:

From: someone
Merrill said: "His unique experience building online environments, like Second Life, will be invaluable to EMI Music as we create new digital communities for fans and artists."

I wonder if they'll be bringing artists into SL, or creating stand-alone communities.

With all Cory did, I wouldn't call him the creator of SL, I think that goes to Philip Rosedale. Cory was widely responsible for the nuts and bolts code, but Cory brought to life what Philip 'created'. IMHO.
