Sorry if this has already been asked.....

I need to get a new computer but all seem to come with only Windows Vista now. According to the SL website the game won't run on Vista. Does anyone know how long it could be before they are compatiable?

I soooo need a new comp but can't cope without SL!!

There have been a lot of threads from Vista users - just use the Advanced Search in the forums and search for Vista in a thread title. Some users have had quite a few problems.

I haven't paid a great deal of attention, but I believe that one of the popular video cards ... ATI? nvidea? has troubles with SL in Vista. So do read up :)

I've been running Vista on a laptop with nVidia, no problems yet. But if you really want XP, the simplest approach is to go to a small computer store that builds their own. I'm sure they'll be willing to sell and install whichever version you want. There may also be some online vendors who will still sell XP systems.

Another option would be to buy the Vista system (assuming it's a desktop and not a laptop), and then install XP on it yourself.

I am running SL on Vista. I was having terrible problems crashing and lock ups with it until I put in 2g more Ram and got a new video card (NVidia). Now its running like a charm :-)

We're running SL on one Vista computer here at home and it's a little slow and jerky in some areas, but fine most of the time.

Which ever computer you decide to purchase, please read the list of supported graphics cards BEFORE you purchase the machine. For Vista, it's greatly suggested to get at least 2 Gigs RAM. Most problems with Vista are related to using an ATI or other graphics card that is not supported. As I recall, ATI took longer than usual to updated their drivers after the release of Vista. I've also seen reports of some problems with certain NVidia cards as well.

Until LLABS fully supports Vista I would stay away. I am wating to build a new computer when LLABS finally does suport it. Well some are using Vista now. But investing a large amount of money and installing vista on it. I rather be safe then sorry.

If you're savvy enough to build your own, you ought to be able to either install XP now and upgrade to Vista later (if ever) or else make a dual-boot system.

Well thats what they say right?well installing xp pro is a no brainer then up grading to vista. But who wants the nightmares running in to capaibity issues when up grading . It always happens. remeber when xp was released? and all the issues that cam with it? Vista is no different. I do understand you point and i thought about do my own problems solving ( in rl that what i do ).

Lots of other problems with Vista however. Wait for Vista SP1 (coming soon they say).

As far as I recal, it doesnt actually say it wont run on Vista (evidenced by the number of people who do use Vista here ) but that they dont 'support' Vista. Hence if you have problems caused by vista they wont do anything to help you.

I run on Vista with an Nvidea card and 3 GB ram and its fine.. the Ram was the problem at first as you need about 1.5 GB to run SL and sometimes more.

I've been running SL on a Vista machine for a month now with no problems at all. Installed SL, started it up and bam, works like a charm.

In fact I have much greater stability than I had in XP. I don't have to relog nearly as often.

Ontop of that the rest of my computer runs faster and smother than ever before. I've had 0, that's right ZERO, compatibility issues and the interface is freaking beautiful.

I did take the step to upgrade to 4gb of internal memory and an new GEforce 8600 video card with 512k.

Wait for SP1 if you like but don't be afraid of the upgrade to Vista, if you have a newer computer or are willing to upgrade your hardware it is, in my opinion, WELL worth it.
