I know of an island which appears to have been created in 2004, and looks absolutely untouched, there are no buildings, no apparent terraforming, absolutely nothing.
If it wasn't for the fact that someone is obviously paying monthly tier on it I'd say it was abandoned.
Why would someone do that?
Paying for it in the first place and then realising that SL wasn't for them would seem like a silly but possible mistake. Continuing to pay tier for 3 years seems almost unbelievable.

Sounds corporate to me. I've placed ads in tiny industry magazines that have run me 300 USD/mo for my RL corporation for years. Do they make me my 300 USD back? I couldn't really say. Eventually I pulled most of them, but a typical 1/4 page advertisement for a company in a periodical with readership of 100,000 people is maybe what... 500 to 1500 USD a week, easy, depending on the industry. If it's a corporate owner and it's on the marketing budget, it's prolly just a decimal point near the bottom somewhere... maybe they don't have the 'good contacts' to develop the place or the additional funds to develop it properly yet. Scary, but that's the world of marketing.

To be honest I was thinking about making them an offer for the island. I guess there would be no VAT and maybe it would just take it off their hands for a bargain price. LOL
How can I tell if the sim is class IV or V?

It's either as Desmond says (and the savvy SL marketing teams here would jump on chance to say "hi, can I help you?" , OR A forgotten hobby that a parent gave to a child (not necessarily a teen either). People buy things for someone, forget about it and the charges get lost in a sea of other monthly charges. These people are usually wealthy, obviously So they won't miss a couple hundred dollars in tier per month when stacked up against their golf membership etc.

There has been 128 sq metres for sale next to my place for L$12,800 since December 2006. I asked the vendor whether he/she was open to offers and they said no.

I know why he isnt moving his price, I always set whatever land I own to some very high price, I dont need to move but if some one needs it that bad I am willing to. I even put a price on the land where my store is at.... much higher than anyone should be willing to pay but I have been surprised before. Alice, do you realise that doing that makes buying land harder? I have lost count of the number of times I have flown over to for sale land only to find it set to a stupid price by someone who obviously doesn't really want to sell.

Just look at the price per sq m before TPing over there. LL even calculates the L$/sqm for you in the Land Listings. ~Jessy

~Jessy Unless you are looking for land on a particular sim, the only way to search for land is by using the land search and sorting mainland by price per meter. Otherwise you are flapping your arms for nothing.

Abandoned???
10-09-2007 14:50
I was at the top of my tier. I had already donated land. I wanted to purchase a 512 parcel adjacent to a 512 I already own. I abandoned a 512 parcel to keep from going up a tier ($75 USD per mo.). My land ownership still shows the 512 I abandoned. How long does it take for the abandoned land to drop off my ownership holdings? Should I have done something other than abandon the land? I wanted to act quickly. Yikes! FLH

~Jessy If you use the map to scan for decent plots, it is extremely annoying to find what looks like a decent spot with a ridiculously astronomical price on it that tells me that they have no intention to sell. People who want your land are going to make you an offer, regardless of whether or not it's listed for sale. You can tell them at that time that you are not interested in selling, but would part with it for X amount.

You do know you can click on the little icon with the $ symbol on the yellow plots and that will give you the current asking price, right? ~Jessy

I WISH there was a way of asking for abandoned land to be tidied up. I have two plots bordering my holdings which are clearly frozen solid - one promises "free lindens" for filling in web questionnaires, and the other contains a picture of someone's dog; and that's it. It's owned by an "O'Dell", which I guess means it's a corporate payment plot - and they are just not at home.
I'd like to see LL set up a few sims where all these plots can be butted up one against another and release the land to active users: just leaving trash around the place is somewhat against the spirit of all those lovely sunsets, Windlight, yada yada...

I did that only once, the guy proceded to surround my lot with a giant prim wall and colored the inside at first with red KFC ads, the switched to solid black, worried it still wasnt high enough he put in a second level of giant prims until it looked like my lot was the black tower... Thats why now I just set a price and dont respond to IM's about land offers.
