Hello, I wanted to hide my name, the one that's above your head.
I know you can deactivate it on your preferences but others will see your name isn't that right?
any one knows another way to hiding it? Thanks

You can't. And even if you could, others can just access your profile to see it. ;)

Ok, make a prim that LOOKS like your nametag - but with someone else's name on it. Then attach it to your skull at the point your nametag usually hovers.

*grin* Just kidding. The real nametag would just hover above that.

Although I've never seen it in use, and don't know where to get one, I have heard of a semi-effective technique. It involves an animation that moves your av up to 20m away from its 'center'. So the av appears to be in one place, but its nametag stays at its center. The nametag is still somewhere around floating in the air, but it's not over the av's apparent location where people expect to see it.

Again, have never verified this, just heard of it.

Aside from griefing uses, I can't imagine why anyone would want this.

Under Edit / Preferences / General, check the box next to "Hide My Name on My Screen". With that selected, you won't see your own name. Other people will see it, though, unless they have chosen "Never" under "Show Names".

when there are so many in a room, it helps remove one shadowed box from your screen. You can't remove it from others seeing it, but you can so "you" don't see it. Check in your chat preferences in world. I believe it is there. When I get in world today I will recheck just were it is I saw it when adjusting my own preferences.

Would you like people to have their names over their head in RL too? ;)

I personallly have names show temporarily.

I imagine if it weren't for the names over our heads then people would be less inclined to change their avatar for fear of not being recognized by friends. Either that or people would be forced to mouse over everybody before moving on. That would be soooo tiring.

So yeah, okay, the names are important! :)

The question is not how to make names invisible for those who want them invisible but how to make them invisible for everyone, regardless of preference. I don't like to force my preferences on anyone else, nor do I like theirs forced upon me.

When SL decided to have shaded bubbles the first thing I did was remove that from my sight. It still startles me when I see them in people's screenshots.

This would be a wonderful RL option for folks who have Prosopagnosia.

In my SL, everyone has a nametag and it helps make my SL an enjoyable place.

Altighty thanks.

Now another invisible question.
How can I make an insivible avatar?
I use photoshop CS2 if I delete everything from the skin bases(making everything transparent) it will become an invisible skin?
Also can I do that for clothes? thanks.

Well, clothes you cn jsut take off *shrugs*

I'm not sure the effect on using a alpha texturing on skin would have. I think you'll jsut wind up showing the base SL skin.

You can use invis-prims to "cloak" your avatar, but they do have drawbacks. They show as "holes" in other alpha textures (like trees and grass and clouds) and obscure any other avatars behind them.

There are also AO's that move your avatar "underground" so you appear invisible (until you fly that is lol)

Dude, you are a true and good friend, and I love you like the brother that my mom claims she never had, but you are in fact acting like a flaming douche on white toast with a side order of dickknob salsa..maybe you should reconsider this course of action and we go find something else to do.

Check out the Textures forum (further down the list on the main forum page). It is primarily devoted to skin and clothes texturing, and there are some great stickies at the top to teach you all about alpha channels / transparency. :)

Hide your name tag so no one can see it..... hmmm.. you planning a bank raid?

The moment you said anything in chat, your name would appear in front, and even if you were in a crowded sim, by deduction, someone could workout its your name.. r/h clicking on your avatar they can see your profile....

When your avatar is just out of someone viewing range, your name tag appears on a bounding box.

Ever tried roleplaying Batman with a Bruce Wayne sign hovering over your head?
I would love the option of changing it, even if your real name was still visible in your profile.

Have you visited my new shop called The Emperors New Clothes? Don't be concerned if you can't actually see any clothing hanging from the rails.. just pay the rail a couple of 1,000L$ and you will dissapear from view.... Make sure you choose the right shade to match your skin.. I don't give refunds.

While you are there.. I have some 'Prison Soap'.. you simply wear it.. and it animates you using the soap, but after 20 seconds, you are teleported to a prison shower room, whereby the soap keeps slipping from your hand, and you go into an unstoppable loop of bending down to pick it up..... The soap is free.. the 'Get Out Of Jail' tokens are only 5,000L$. Don't be concerned that the prison shower room looks remotely like a Gay bar.

Now providing you did manage to pick the exact right shade of clothing from the rack, no one in the bar will see you, you will be invisible.. and none of the residents will click the 'pay to view' vendor.. or the 'pay to join you' vendor.

Give hints (on a nc or sign) for role-playing that include turning off nametags?

I'd guess most people seeing you know you aren't really Bruce Wayne.

Clothes are different from the skin. They are another layer on top of the skin, and yes you can make "holes" and "rips" in the clothes by having the alpha channel show in those spaces. This is how tattoos are made; the majority of the clothing layer (like an undershirt, for example) is blank, leaving only the alpha channel showing. The tattoo shows up because the alpha channel is "cut out" around the tattoo pattern. There are a bunch of stickies in the texture forums which describe what exactly alpha is and how it works.
