Must I own the land to set it as my home?
If I want to use a friend's land as my starting home, is this possible?
What are my alternatives?

You can set home to any land in which you are a group member, IF the group role you have is granted that ability by the group/land owner.
Is your friend's land group land? If he's renting, he can ask the landlord for one 'roommate' - some allow this. You'd need to join the same group as the land is set to, then wear the group tag, and choose World/Set to Home in your viewer.

You can also set Home to infohubs. You can search for "infohub" although you do get a lot of other junk in the results.
Some of the infohubs also have sandboxes, which are handy if you don't have a place to build or open boxes.

True, forgot about that. Although I think "hub" and "hell" are mighty close in the dictionary.
The Forum Cartel Hangout allows 'set home to here' for members. So does this mall I ran across the other day, called Zest Mall I think. It had a small lot open only to group members, and the sign said you can set home and rez in it.

You can set your Home location to:
- any Linden land.
- any land owned by a Group you're a member of, that allows that. The Forum Cartel is one. Caledon Oxbridge is another. If you rent land, your renters group will let you set Home there.
- any land you own.

Some of them are pretty quiet, and even nice. Hyannisport, Mauve, Hyles are good ones. If you need to open boxes at Hyannisport, though, you have to go to the ocean floor on the next sim. |

Once you set Home on group land, you can leave that group and the location will still work as your Home.
