Hi everybody,

I'm trying to create a new avatar and it looks like Second Life created a new system, where you type your name in first, and then it gives you the list of available last names. My issue is that I'm looking for a specific last name first and I want to put a first name with it. After all, that's how I named my current character Stella.

Is that possible anymore? And just because I'm curious, can anyone provide a list of all available last names in Second Life? Is there a way I can create a character the former way, by typing in a first name + selecting a last name, and then seeing if the combination is available, rather than 1 step at a time?

Hope you understand my question. Any information or links would be appreciated. Thanks.

I could be wrong but I don't think there is any way to register with a surname that isn't available in the selection provided when you specify a first name. So I guess you just need to keep typing alternative first names until the surname you're looking for comes up.

It would be great if the Lindens offered the option to choose the entire name on registration. They would probably need to charge in order to cover costs for approval but I wouldn't object to paying a reasonable fee for the service.

I'd even consider cancelling all accounts and restarting SL as an entirely new virtual individual.

Check inworld in search that the name you want isn't already used, then if the combination is available just keep refreshing until the surname appears.

Pep (it is mind-numbingly boring now)

Is this a proven method? I mean, I actually did try re-typing in the same first name, and each time, by pressing the "See Available Last Names" button, the exact same last names appeared each time. I know there are more names. I somehow managed to get a name that doesn't even appear in the list!

BTW, about the SL Name Watch thing, I have visited that site before I posted this thread. I did not find it helpful. How can I make use of it -- is there a feature within the Web site that I missed?

Edit: I have even tried typing in gibberish, like Auiehfdsl and IOklawrhn and they give me a very limited list of last names. This is getting frustrating.

you'll always get a limited list, but it's been suggested (not sure it's proven) that the list won't return any last names for which that first name is already used.

my experience trying to get a specific last name was that only a few name where different each time, leading me to believe that that unpopular last names might be weighted higher, and show up more frequently in the 'random' sublist you're given

I have found that even a prospective combination at registration will remove that possibility from the list. For example: I'm thinking about Mary Underby and I change my mind, deciding on Gerry Underby but then I figure I prefer Mary Writer and try that before finally deciding to go back to Mary Underby only to find that the combination is no longer available.

There's a JIRA about this although I can't find the link just now. However, I did find that this seems to be what happens when I attempted to create an alt recently.

No. Try clearing cache and relog... um... nevermind.

SH!# that stupid trick is back again? I thought they fixed that problem once already... I lost an excellent name to that back when I made this account (instead of the name I'd chosen, but lost due to a seized connection)

PS, interest new name batch, includes Molko (as in Brian, lead singer for Placebo), Winslet (as in Kate, the actress), Warhol (and in 'Andy' the artist), Khalim (perhaps refering to Khalim Massoud), Dionysus (ya know, the Deity), Quixote (as in Don, of the book), Pinelli (as in Guisepe, anarchist and subject of a play), and Starship (as in Jefferson Airplane, the band),

Ephraim Kappler shakes his head: and SL will just have to carry on without dear Mr Underby.

Worked for me - you just have to be patient and very, very persistent.

on the slname watch thing, if you follow this link

http://www.slnamewatch.com/botlog/last_avail_log.html

then scrolling down you will see which gateway that name is available at

or since it is a bit hard to read them, just use search on your browser if you are looking for a specific last name, then see what gateway it is listed under

Thank you tons. I found a last name I liked the the gateway offered every single one listed -- not just a small selection as in Second Life registration. Your instructions have been extremely helpful.
