i need more prims- i know i can buy more land and use those prims-- but how close does the land have to be to my present land?

It needs to be in the same sim, that's the only requirement.

cheers for the speedy response--- hmmm how big is a sim? is it one area- like mine is Thorklin . is Thorklin a Sim?... i know i sound thick but i really dont know....

It's a region of 256x256m, which will have a single name, in your case yes Thorklin will be your Sim name. This shows in the top bar of your client window.
