a few days ago there was a thread here with a link to a site where people were seeing what celebrities their avatar looked like. Because I am cautious to the point of almost being anal, I made sure to use an alternate e-mail address (NOT the address I use for my account on SL) when I went to that site (I was going to do it but realized it was just a spam up your mailbox thing and left in disgust).
Imagine my surprise today when I checked that email and found something telling me to come check out the NEW second life...when, to the best of my knowledge, SL doesn't even know that email address. Yes, just click here and log in weeee.....not.
Legit? I dunno, I'm certainly not going to log into it...the return address on the email was SecondLife@email.secondlife.com, which IS a valid email for SL but still it kinda worried me.
(I am by no means pointing a finger at the person who started that thread, only putting this out as a warning to anyone who might have registered on that site. Like I said, the address looks legit but I'm over cautious sometimes).

This almost certainly a phishing attempt. The right side of the @ is the actual domain name (email.secondlife.com) and I can almost guarantee, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Linden Labs is not the real owner. The registration information will more than likely say otherwise, but is probably forged.

From: Ghosty Kips Probably a forgery. Doubt it came from LL at all. LOL Yes be careful with all emails, but they sent out a genuine mailing on the 27th August Subject: The New SecondLife.com is LIVE and sent from that email address which is the one that LL are using for their mailings at the top of the yucky looking page was: Introducing the New SecondLife.com - Your Window to the World. Can't view this email? View it online. Don't miss a thing: add SecondLife@email.secondlife.com to your safe sender list. To stop receiving these emails, please unsubscribe here. and the big picture had an orange button that said 'Vist site' It was genuine

As one very smart cookie said, and made the title of his autobiography:

Rightly done, OP.

Has anyone else gotten mysterious e-mails they suspect can be attributed to that site?
I've gotten nothing in the account I used for that site.

Also, there is nothing on that site that even promotes secondlife. It is a ancestory website, if in fact a spam came from there I would imagine it would be from that or such like it. But there was no inclination to anything about second life from that site. I think you need to look for something else causing your spam.

I guess I should clarify...first everybody read Lord's posts above!! Those are legitimate SL emails. BTW I've been a member of that Heritage site for over 3 years...got no spam.. and there's no way for them to know if you're in SL and it has nothing to do with SL. I just thought it was fun to use the avatar pics and discovered that it worked for those (in most cases).
Also, you don't even gotta join that site to use the facial recognition thing.

I've got eleven emails from email.secondlife.com .
The first one was on Jan. 11, and was a "Welcome to SL, Xstreet users" message. They all seem to be promotional or patting themselves on the back in nature.

Ralektra, is there any chance you might have used that e-mail address to register an alt at some point of time?

From: Katheryne Helendale Ralektra, is there any chance you might have used that e-mail address to register an alt at some point of time? there is, and that's why I said 'to the best of my knowledge' because my memory isn't as good as it once was It appears that it was genuine although I wonder why I never received it on my main account, it might have gone directly to spam tho and I never saw it. I just panicked a bit, and quite likely erred on the side of caution.

I did give info at that site - they actually wanted a physical mailing address, AND it had to be a *valid* address as far as the US Post Office is concerned. It took me a little figuring, but in my city the alleys are all named (so that the police can give parking tickets). I'm just telling you in case someone hacks the database and comes looking for Seven Okelli in Public Alley No. XXX - I won't be there. I used an email account that I made specifically for signing up for stuff - but I haven't gotten any mail there that I wasn't getting before. As far as the SL emails, they're legit. I've been getting them for a couple of weeks, at least. One invite for a fashion event, one for coming to see the NEW SL (!) and a couple survey requests. But all that stuff came before I did the celebrity look-alike thing. Oh - I *did* get an email from one of the celebrities (!) - she said she wants her face back. .
