I want to switch from Vista to Linux but as I spend most of my online time in SL I want to make sure I get the best Linux distro for SL. Any suggestions?

For mainstream (big userbase) distributions, in most cases, SL client run perfectly out of the box. If your audio and Video has been properly setup that is.

For non mainstream distributions, it might take a bit more fiddling/tweaking before it runs smooth.

In the end, it works on both ends.

Some safe bets in random order (with hardly any tweaking needed):

Fedora
Ubuntu
SuSE
Mandriva

It's a personal taste though.

Other less out of the box safe bets (semi mainstream):

Slackware
Gentoo
Debian (the mother of ubuntu)
