as the title says, i'm in NYC part work, part play. i got here nearly two weeks ago, so I have two questions: 1. is it mad that I've just spent $3k on a laptop so I can log into SL (hey by the way I get better connection with the laptop than my supa-dupa desktop machine at home and it's wireless too!) 2. can someone condense the general concensus of replies to some of the most popular questions in the past 2 weeks, thanks. oh and hello everyone

Welcome to New York. Business as usual. "SL and or LL sucks/Stop whining" or "You guys are a clique/No, we're not" or "These new features a ruining SL/ Buy a new computer" or "Why do you do that in SL it's "stupid/wierd/illegal"/Stop oppressing me, you are full of hate". Throw in a couple of "I got ripped off/No you didn't" and "Stop posting silly threads/Stop telling us to stop posting silly threads" and you've summed things up nicely.
Oh and evidently Ricardo likes dogs.

I'm a native New Yorker who hasn't lived there for more than a decade and misses it. Give my regards to Broadway.

If you can afford it, it's not that insane to purchase a 3k laptop if it's because it is a powerful laptop. Even if you did it just to access SL since you will end up using it for other things. I'm not a fan of the concept of getting a laptop that just meets the current requirements for the intended use because the laptop will quickly become obsolete over a relatively short period of time since one can't upgrade a laptop the way one can with a desktop. The questions are always the same: "I got scammed by....." "Random question about sex or relationships in SL......" "I got griefed by......." "How do I do something that I can learn to do by reading stickies or using the search forums function......" The general answer to all questions for the past two weeks has of course been pie.

From: Imnotgoing Sideways You need moar cores. (^_^) I can has four alreadies! Have fun in NY Dekka! It's a great place to visit. You aren't insane and Dagmar was right on. If you can afford a more powerful laptop, you're better off getting it than you are one that barely meets your requirements. You can always use less power, but if you need more, it's expensive and laptops are not as easy to upgrade. You'll use the extra juice for something eventually.

Well of course, it is nearly the best specs available, I could have gone to 2.6 mhz instead of the 2.5 I went for, but for another $600, I doubt I would notice the difference that much and yes I will definitely use it for work when traveling. I had NYC apple pie yesterday, yummy.

If I can squeeze an RA type question in past all the congratulations and general discussion...
What laptop, Dekka? If it runs SL real well, I want one too.

From: Rioko Bamaisin The topics never do seem to change,do they? It's like a vicious cycle. .... Isn't that partly because the same issues keep cropping up for new people though or that some problems are never resolved by the Lindens? Having said that I can think of at least one time when a new topic comes along - when a new policy is announced and so perhaps it is a just a perception thing because the other topics are so prevalent.
