Mouse-over avatar name display problem

Last week all of a sudden on my laptop, when I point my my cursor at someone, the name does not appear anymore. I don't recall making any changes. Is there some setting somewhere that turns this on or off or am I just screwed? I normally like to only temporarily show names above avatar's heads. But can't if I can't point at them to get their name.
