Havok is a 'game' engine--which runs many different games, including SL. Havok is a pretty well optimized engine when it comes to PHYSICS.

The new Havok engine (which the beta grid is testing) will implement real-time physics...watch some of the videos posted here on the forums, and you'll see why it might interest a lot of people.

Havok is the piece of software that makes physics work in SL. It mainly affects vehicles and some novelties, but it can also be used to crash the sim.

For several years now, LL have been promising to upgrade to a newer version of Havok, that should be more efficient and less likely to crash sims. Finally, they've announced a version of Havok 4 to test on the beta grid, instead of the Havok 1 that they are currently using on the main grid.
