I'm not sure what that particular kit contains, but for most "avatar kit" type things are a box or package containing items to be "worn".

You might wanna be somewhere you have a little privacy, if you are just learning to change clothes in SL, because sometimes things can get a little weird...
Under the ocean is usually a good place.

First, rez the item on the ground somewhere (drag it from your inventory onto the ground).

Then right click it and choose "open" from the pie menu.

Then choose "Copy to inventory". (Note, if you are SURE it contains only wearable things, you can choose "copy and wear", but this can sometimes result in wearing strange things like chairs and old tires.)

Open your inventory and there will be a new folder with the same name as the kit. Right click on each of the items in the folder and choose "wear".

(Normally I would say right click on the whole folder and choose "wear", but since I don't know what is in the kit you got, I'd recommend putting items on one at a time.)

If there are any leftover bits of human clothes or whatever, type "worn" in your inventory window and whatever you don't want to wear, right click and choose "take off".

Hope that helps!

PS. Torley's video tutorials demonstrate all kinds of SL survival basics. I found them VERY helpful when I was new. Here is the link:

Which "free furry starter kit" would that be?

It sounds like something you got from a vendor somewhere or a gift giver.

If it is an object in your Objects folder, then you'll need to go to someplace where you can rez it (drag it from your inventory onto the ground), and then right-click it, and click "Open" on the pie menu. From there, you click the "Copy and Wear" button, which will make a folder for you with the contents, and change you into a furry.

If it is already a folder in your inventory, then all you need to do is drag the folder onto yourself.

That's the uber-simplified version. Chances are, your situation may not fit the most generic criteria for which those instructions are meant, but without more info, it will have to do until your next question. :)

They really should put something in orientation that says there's no such thing as "The" with a capital T in SL. With the exception of the small handful of items in the inventory library, anything you find, get given, buy, or otherwise acquire in SL is just something some random person made, and there's a pretty good chance there will be thousands of other similar items out there somewhere.

Asking how to use "the free furry starter kit" in SL is like asking how to use "the toolkit" in RL. There could be literally thousands of different kinds of items called "furry starter kit" out there, scattered around the SL world, just as there are thousands of different toolkits to be found in the real world. The same questions will apply in both worlds, before anyone can know how to instruct you with whatever you've got. Where'd you get the thing? Who made it, or what brand is it? Did it come with any instructions at all? What specific objects are in it?

It's not easy to help you with specifics until and unless we know more about what exactly you have. I hope that makes sense. :)

That said, the advice given in this thread so far has been very good. Follow it. If you have any more specific questions, come on back and ask.

I'm not familiar with that specific item, but it sounds like it is a collection of avatars. In that case, the package is going to contain sub-packages (a box full of boxes, if you will). Just rez one of the sub-packages and open it just like you would any other box of clothes. Then just wear the contents of that sub-package.

Most "complete avatars" contain a shape, skin, hair, eyes, possibly some clothing, and maybe a few additional prims that need to be attached to complete the effect.

Yeah, that is nothing more than a box of the readily available freebie furry avs that anyone can nab. So as Katheryne says, rez the box, right click and select Open, and then click on Copy to Inventory. Then you will likely have a folder containing a bunch more boxes - one per furry avatar. Drag one of those to the ground, open it and copy to inventory. Then on that folder you can right click and select an option for wearing all the items in the folder.

I don't think that one contains any Bad Stuff. Here's the easy way:

1. Go to Help Island Public, a public sandbox, or any build-enabled area.
2. Drag the item to the ground. Right click, select Open.
3. Click Copy to Inventory, or manually select the contents, or a portion of them, and drag them to your inventory window.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for any of the boxed avatars you choose.
(Note: You can keep your inventory organized by creating folders for this stuff. I would create, under Body Parts, the following folder chain. Body Parts/Avatars/Furs/StarterKit/(individual name of avatar here). )
5. Once you have one of the avatars unpacked in its own little inventory folder, just right click the folder and choose "Replace Outfit". That will remove everything you are wearing now, including any HUDs, and put on everything in the folder.
