Is there a way to mute group chat without leaving the group?

I am member of several groups that incessantly chats. When it becomes too much, I just close the window. But no sooner than I do that, someone starts to chat and the window reappears. I know how to prevent receiving notices. But surely, there is some way to mute the group chat without leaving the group?
If there isn't, there should be.

Only thing to do is click the chat window closed. I wonder if snowglobe viewer has this feature.

You could try leaving the group chat window open, detaching it from the main window, and moving it way off to the edge of the screen or minimising it. I think that, together with making sure "Include IM in Local Chat" is unchecked in Preferences > Communication, should stop the text from filling your screen and distracting you.

From: sable Valentine I just close the window. But no sooner than I do that, someone starts to chat and the window reappears. This is strange because usually when you click the chat window shut, you do not receive any further group notices during this logon session. Oh, wait - do you click the combined chat window close? Try closing just the offending group window, they each have separate x tags to close them. Usually that "mutes" the group for this logon.

I am using Snowglobe, and when I close a group IM tab then it does not come back during that session unless I go to that group and specifically open it. I think that's the case with the current regular viewer also.

@Skell & Novis, thank you for your wonderful suggestions. I haven't heard a peep out of them.

If I go to Receive group notices and uncheck the box, will I not get the same results?

Group notices are distinct from group chat.
I don't seem to have a problem with group chat, and I'm fairly easily bothered by annoying popup things.
I just checked in to see what the deal is with group chat windows popping up , and all my groups are missing, it says I'm in zero groups, when I'm actually in 25 groups.
Sigh.

if you happen to keep the chat history window open you'll also need to go to debug and find the right setting to stop IM's from showing there too if you are just unchecking "show IM's in chat"" (a seriously stupid change by LL if you ask me)

I usually minimize the window but it's still pretty annoying. Being able to disable this would be great.
