One of the first interviews concerning about SL http://web.archive.org/web/20070118051024/webreprints.djreprints.com/00000000000000000025354001.htmlTwo quotes from that 2002 interview caught my eye: From: someone Could a user create a body with five heads? The Linden Lab founders decided they would prefer a world of recognizable humans.
Could someone walk around all the time in simulated nudity? Yes, and Mr. Rosedale expects some will do just that. Yet he expects groups of users will opt to require clothing in certain parts of the environment, just as there are family movies and X-rated ones. Intersting stuff. But who is Steller? Rock

From: Rock Vacirca But who is Steller? from /120/0f/940/1.html#post5257From: Robin Linden Second Life first went online last March as LindenWorld. The very first resident was Steller Sunshine, and the first thing she built was a...beanstalk! We were thrilled to see it climb right into the sky. Last time I looked, the beanstalk was still there, and you can try to climb it.

And where is Steller?
I wish more 'founder' or 'early beta' residents would come in and share.
I actually spent a very brief time in-world during beta. I vaguely remember those things you could shoot, and miles and miles (seemingly) of nothing - empty land. It was night and I didn't know if/how one could change it to daylight.
I met a total of one person. They told me about the prim system which sounded way over my head. I saw a house and said "wow how can I get one of those?" He said I had to build it. But didn't know where I could learn (didn't seem interested in teaching me). He did mention something about the land you could get for joining, but when I asked him how big the lot would be he couldn't be bothered to explain it very well. (Or maybe I was thick.)
Another time (this may have been after it went public) I flew around and saw that someone had set up sex poseballs in their house. I felt shocked. Who'd wanna do that and why, I thought.
Could this memory be accurate? But that's how I remember it.
Since I never really saw live humans (playing the game), and floating around a deserted planet wasn't my idea of fun, plus RL concerns/demands, I didn't come back until 2006. By then my av was gone. Or did I forget its name...I don't remember now. Anyway I made a new one.
I joined, never figured a way off help island except to go to a big deserted mall full of tacky clothes. I quit again for two years although I kept paying for membership (not having been successful in my attempts to cancel). Once I began playing again though I was in it for keeps (I think).

This is a cool historical video if you haven't seen it before: Linden World August 2001 by James Linden http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uK3x3FNlleU

@Clarissa - That sounds like my experience when Active Worlds first came out. I was there during Beta or very soon after.
All I saw was a lot of flat land and nothingness. Same as you experienced, the owner of the "world" I was on said I could build "anything I wanted, including my own house" but failed to tell me *how* and *with what*. Then he took off.
A couple of friends came over from IRC to join me and check it out. I quickly discovered I wasn't that great at talking and moving my avatar at the same time and usually ended up way up in the stratosphere or buried underground someplace. One of my friends started to get the hang of using the land tools for terraining, but that didn't interest me either, so all I saw was this huge void that I "could" build "anything" on but no earthly idea "how."
I decided that was a stupid place and beat it back to IRC...lol.
Several years later some friends invited me to join them in EverQuest. At least this time there was a populated world - plus friends to get me started. My 7 years there was a huge help in getting acclimated to SL.

For other early content, seek out the Governor's Mansion (also built by Steller Sunshine) in Clementina, and The Man statue in Natoma.
