I run a windows vista 2gig Ram 2.1gig processor computer on vista, it is on a stable wireless connection, yet I cannot get stable voice in spatial or IM voice chat. I have also been recieveing OUT OF MEMORY messages from SL.exe. I was wondering if anyone had any information that may help me fix these problems.
Thanks

If you can try it with a wired connection and see if it works then, that would be information.
More info might help. Does the Vista have SP1? What make and model of wireless router, cable modem, type of processor, video card, etc. Usual stuff.

How long have you been on for when you get an out of memory error? There are memory leaks.

I run vista sp1 with no problems. The main difference is that I have 4gigs of ram - problem is that vista sucks a gig up for the os for some reason so you are only actually getting 1 gig to play with. ( I get 3 ) so everything runs smoothly and blitzes.
The other thing is that I run vista in windows classic mode and have everything switched off, I ran XP in classic mode as well - my desktop basically still looks the same as it did back in 95. May sound boring but hey, you get minimum processor and ram drain so the computyer can run an application much smoother and faster.
You may want to turn off all your other programs including IM clients, active desktops and basically anything that you dont really need. If you are running Norton get rid of that and switch to AVG. Norton is a massive drain on resources.
added: if you can, buy more ram - vista runs soooo much better

FYI it's not Vista that eats that one gig, it's your video card memory that sits on top of your man ram it and makes it inacessable to any 32 bit OS. Xp does the same, but Vista or XP 64 don't for example. If you have a 512 graphics card then you lose 512, a dual 512 and you lose a gig, a dual 768 and you lose 1.5gig! O.O THat's where moving to 64 bit really kicks ass

Crashing on taking pictures
06-24-2008 14:03
#I have a new laptop with Windows Vistas and I am crashing out every time I try to upload a picture, or take a picture or download a picture - basically anything I try to do with a picture in SL is doomed - it's an immediate crash to desktop.
CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (1994 MHz) Memory: 3070 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (Build 6001) Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce 9500M GS/PCI/SSE2 OpenGL Version: 2.1.2 LLMozLib Version: [LLMediaImplLLMozLib] - 2.01.16127 (Mozilla GRE version 1.8.1.13_0000000000)
I checked the drivers, but this laptop already has the most up to date drivers. I have tried seting everything low as possible and that doesn't help. I have tried switching off evrything else... nothing seems to help. Anyone have any ideas?
Apart from the photograph or texture crashing thing, SL is working really well, I have no other problems, just this. Thanks Cali

Would it mean I could assign more video memory and say for example run antialiasing at 8x or 16x rtather than at 2x or 4x?

Thanks No fix but same thing happens to me. I get multi error messages on teh advanced window as well regarding audio. So I dont use chat, and of course people get attitudes with me or think Im a man... or stuck up. I try to explain but no one apparently believes me. I was shown how to use yahoo and I use that now. This latest error I am getting is, INFO: LLAudioEngine: tartNextTransfer: Getting asset data for: (removed cause not sure what it means) WARNING: LLAssetStorage::_queueDataRequest: Attempt to move asset data request u pstream w/o valid upstream provider INFO: LLAudioEngine::assetCallback: Boom, error in audio file transfer: Circuit gone (-23017) That happens when I click SL to logon... never get to the login screen beacuse when SL opens it goes to a small window and says not responding. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.. can't get online at this point because program is borked.

Well, that's still a tough question It would be compeltely worth it for the ability to have more memory EVEN IF you ran nothing but 32 bit programs. (SL, Blender, Photoshop, and 6 other programs running can run out 3 gig pretty fast) But the lack of proper 64 bit drivers can be a PITA still so... most of my machines are still 32 bit just to avoid that problem.

If you currently have xp32 then going to vista64 is a bit of a toss up. You get the extra ram, but the OS is just bigger and has a harder impact on your system overall. You turn some of it off, but mostly likely it's alot of effort just to keep an even keel. And especially in terms of SL, vista has no built in openGL, xp does. Either way, available system ram wouldn't directly impact somethign very graphics specific like AA, but might have a general improvement in FPS. If you want very high end AA you need a very high end graphics card.

Also some graphics drivers have been noted to relieve audio problems. Since the advent of things like DirectX and even MMX they are interrelated.

From: Vampaerus Wysznik is this still happening? every time? Yes, every time, without fail. If I try to upload a single texture or bulk upload, I crash. If I try to take a picture I crash. If I try to download a texture to my desktop from SL I crash. I tried the RC viewer and that made no difference. I have the most up to date drivers for my graphics card. I have tried turning everything down. Cali

Thank you so much for this link! As you say, other people have the same problem, and Xi came up with a workaround, which is to change the path in the communications tab for SL preferences. Ta da! It will need resetting over and over, but I don't care - it will make life SO much easier. Thank you! Cali

Thanks for advice regarding Vista64 - I may consider it at some point but I am in fact completely happy with my SL experience in 32bit so there seems little point as my frame rate is fine and the graphics slider can't go any higher than they already are. To be honest with AA I can't really see a massive difference between 2x, 4x, 8x and 16x - even 2x is a much better visual experience than Disabled - obviously the more AA you pull the lower your frame rate

Any Clues to my problem?
06-25-2008 04:17
I have a laptop with Vista OS, bought about 6 months ago brand new but I have never been able to run SL on it. It has high speed processor and 2 gig mem but the graphics card is Radeon Xpress 200M - I have downlaoded and installed the latest drivers. I have never reached the log in screen, the thing just goes straight to the crash report pop up which, btw never sends a report. I have contacted support via the ticket system but all I was told was that the problem is with the graphics card and I should update the drivers...as I said already done. I have to use an old laptop with a slow processor and old graphics card which hasnt had the drivers updated for yonks. Any cliues on how to solve this problem will be very much appreciated

Hi Shirley, I'm ntot sure if SL supports Rad 200 - maybe somebody else can answer that. I know when i had a radeon I needed to download 3rd party drivers in the end, they were called "Omega Drivers" or something.
Try switching off *everything* you dont need running - that includes switching your desktop to classic mode as it frees up resources and cpu.
If it still busts have a look in the application event log and see why it's crashing - it may give you a reason in there

Hi Amy thanks for your reply, am already running Vista in classic mode. As for the event log and crash log, there is nothing in there to show why it crashed. As i say, I have never got to the connect/log in screen. All I get after it has done the usual hardware check etc messages, is a black screen then just as the bottom log in details appears, it crashes

Cripes I have no idea then...
Have you tried one of the alternate viewers to see if you still get the problem? One of the open-source ones - I think it's called Nicholaz. I'm sure somebody else in the forum can step in on this one
