I'm setting up a new computer, and I have this weird issue with the microphone ... it is working fine with Windows Recorder and Yahoo voice, but neither Skype nor Second Life see the mic at all. In SL terms, this means that I can turn Voice Chat on, but when I go to adjust the devices in Preferences, no boxes light up on the little mic volume bar. If I just go ahead, i never see green radiation around the little white dot over my head. I do not get any errors.

This same headset works just great in SL on 2 other computers, tho it is several years old. And, as I said, on this PC it works OK in some other applications.

I am using Win XP Pro, sp 2. No sound card, so am using whatever chip is on the motherboard (the Device Manager lists it just as PnP Audio Device). I've installed very few applications, the only media ones I can think of being Quicktime and Yahoo Messenger.

Thots?

(Caveat: Linux geek advising on Windows. :o ) XP's "Sounds and Audio Devices" control panel has separate gizmos for "Audio" and "Voice"... could it be that the "Voice" one isn't configured to any hardware?

Voice is configured to the same one as the audio (and there is no other), PnP Audio Device.

When I use the little test widget in that same dialog box, it informs me that my audio is half-duplex (that is, it says that if I'm listening to others talk, they won't be able to hear me, lol!). I can't imagine that Skype and SL voice detect that and refuse to play, tho.

Make sure Yahoo voice is not on or running in the background or Skype for that matter.
In Windows Sounds and Audio Device Properties Audio tab make sure you headset is set as Default device for both Sound playback and Sound recording.
In Preferences – Voice Chat try setting Input device (microphone) and Output device (speaker) both to Default.
If you’re new computer uses something like Realtek audio make sure you use the Realtek control panel, and Realtek is set in Windows Sounds and Audio Device Properties Voice tab.
If your headset is not USB you may want to try one.
Good luck and if you still have problems you can IM me inworld.
