I had a normal log-off about an hour ago. I wanted to check something several mins ago, so I attempted to log back on. Five times so far I've gotten the "Login failed. The system is logging you off right now. Your account will not be available till [about four minutes hence]" in mid-login. I'm starting to get a little concerned. I've tried different logging into different locations. Does anyone know what exactly causes this sort of error?

Only five times? Your patience is short grasshopper.

All seriousness aside, I had it take ten or twelve or so attempts to get logged in through that error. The sim you were in hasn't logged you out yet. You *may* have some success by logging in an alt at sending yourself an IM or a linden. Or you may have as good results by running around your front yard seven times nekkid and sacrificing a chicken. Or was it a goat?

SL's been goofy the past couple or so days, be patient.

Your avatar is ghosted. The LL servers have not logged your avatar off completely. The fix is to have the sim where you're ghosted restarted. For estate land you will need to contact the sim owner. For mainland you will need to submit a support ticket. Just tell whoever you contact what has happened and they will know what to do.

Time will also fix it......though the time may be longer than you want to wait.

Thank you for the replies. I still can't get in. I will try both your suggestions.

Edit: I see you are correct. I am shown as still being logged in.

Is there a way to make this less likely to happen again in the future, like something I can do when logging off to make sure I in fact log off?

There doesn't seem to be anything you can do to avoid this happening; this ghosting seems to just happen. It does seem to happen more when using vehicles or crossing sim borders, or during teleports (although it can be argued that the more scripted HUDs you wear the more likely you are to crash).

I'd advise everyone to have alts and let each see the others on the World Map, then if one avatar becomes ghosted, the other(s) might be able to locate the ghosted one (although this is not guaranteed). Then when filling out a Support Ticket to LL, you can give a clear location of the sim you are ghosted in, and they should be able to reset the sim pretty quickly and clear the presence (that is for mainland, of course - and as Peggy says above, if you find your ghost on a private region, then its the land owner that needs to be contacted for a sim reset).

Its not really acceptable to still not be able to gain access to Second Life longer than a few hours after submitting a Support Ticket via the website, so always check if the Support Ticket has been allocated to anyone, give the Lindens a gentle nudge to be persistent but polite.

Also, if you're a Premium Resident, then do make full use of Live Chat (found via the website). Help is there - its just timing it right to find the right person for the job it seems.

I filed a support ticket then went to a meeting. I just now got home and an email was waiting stating that my issue was resolved by LL and giving clear instructions on how to log in now that they have logged off my account. I am a basic account, too. So I consider this a very fast resolution.

There is only one problem. My account is still stuck, and my alt shows me still logged in.

And I'm guessing the instructions LL have given you are to do something like bring up the log in screen, go into edit, clear cache, shut down the window, wait 15 minutes, bring up the login screen again, change the log in point to Pooley or Aqua and then you should be able to log in?

The only thing that really works is a sim reset. And maybe the servers have retained enough information so that LL can use their God tools to locate your inworld presence and reset the sim its on.

Hope so. Good luck... please keep us posted.

I did go into world to try and locate your ghost - without any luck - but I found 3 other ghosted avatars.

The instructions you guessed are correct. I have no idea why they would mark my issue resolved and consider it case closed.......surely they could see that AK is still logged in.

I took my alt to my last location and I can't find AK Alchemi. However that account is clearly logged in (AK is in the alt's friend list).

I am confident enough in my password that I wouldn't THINK anybody would be hacking me right now.

How would you go about finding AK if you aren't in her friends list?

I got a reply from LL. They insist that AK Alchemi is logged out. This is not the case! Why can't they see that? So I am reopening the ticket yet again. I have asked the person in question to please give my issue to a supervisor. This is absurd!

I had exactly the same thing happen to me. Its VERY frustrating. Luckily I knew where my ghosted avatar was in the world and I was able to reopen the closed support ticket and attach a photo of my still-ghosted presence.

I don't know why it is but some of the Lindens are absolutely fantastic, helpful to the point of going that extra mile, and then there are one or two who let the rest down by saying they have done a job when they clearly have not. It is more than a little frustrating.

The only thing you can do is reopen the ticket. And then take a brisk walk away from the computer for a few minutes and take some good deep calming breaths (I know you must feel very AAaaaaaargh!! right now)

If I get yet another bogus assurance from the Linden in question that AK is logged off when that's the not case, my plan is to start a new ticket instead of replying to the ongoing one in hopes of getting someone else.

Now just friend yourself to AK (and AK to you)..........give all rights to each other including the ability to locate each other on the map. That way if you get ghosted again, you can log in using whichever account that is not ghosted, locate yourself and be able to give LL details on the exact location of the ghosted avi. That does help speed up getting unghosted.

If you know where you are and it's a private island request a restart from the owner. There's been a rash of ghostings lately, and that's no fun at all.

Thank you Peggy, I had thought of that, but it's a good reminder (to give the alt and AK all permissions). This is an excellent reason for everybody to have an alt!

I got a further note from a different Linden saying: "The issue was resolved because we have cleared the region you were in stuck." That was signed by an actual Linden rather than just a tech support name. I take it that means they restarted the sim.

I had some people IMing me while I was ghosted. I got two IMs, then there'd been a notice that my IMs were capped. Capped after just two?

That happened to me recently also, capped after 2 IM's, but I thought maybe the size of the IM's? Cause they were long IM's.

Size of IMs do not affect the capping. Something apparently just messed up. Though, all group notices and all inventory offers are part of the limit of 20 that will result in IM capping.

A couple of other suggestions for a ghosted avi: If you are on Damage Enabled land, use any weapon that will Kill and the result will almost always take care of the ghosting. Orbiting the ghost also pretty much always fixes it.

AK, I am glad at last there was a happy ending for you and LL eventually got round to resetting the sim and you can now log in again. Long may you live again in SL without ghosting! And Merry Christmas everyone!

Oh, thank you Marigold, only now according my my friends list on the SL web page, my alt is shown as a ghost, and I can't log in to SL as AK to pinpoint the alt's location because SL is fubar (as per the grid status report) and so on and on it goes. I have an SL Christmas party to attend tonight and who knows if I'll get there or not. Ho ho holy crap.
