In SL, go to the Edit menu, preferences, graphics preferences, click the Hardware Options button and uncheck the box for Enable VBO. That should take care of it.

But what caused it, Milla? Had similar the other night, just before my laptop died an ugly death. And, what IS VBO?

VBO is OpenGL Vertex Buffer Objects. It's some kind of graphics programming thing.

The problem with spikes, triangles and all sorts of crazy artifacts on the screen is usually found with ATI graphics adapters and is caused by their crappy OpenGL drivers.

This is one of the most frequent questions in the technical forum, and ought to be some kind of sticky. SL should also detect if you're using an ATI graphics adapter and turn this option off if you are.
