Gorean Combat Sims and Strafing?

So, I play in a Gorean Sim and I was reading a log from someone that was 'strafing' in a combat.

Apparently, this is valid. Does anyone know what this is and how to do it?

I have referenced the topic from the Gorean SecondLife forums for an FYI.

your best bet is to just accept the answer you get on those forums. I don't do PVP on SL, but I used to strafe like crazy on WoW and RL combatants do it, so I don't know why it would'nt be done here.

edit, sorry, didn't read the question completelty (blush)

Strafing is moving to the left or right while still facing your opponent. I don't know how it is done here, on most games you use the W and E keys. If I were in world I would try it but I'm not so sorry :)

You were watching somebody who is exceptionally skilled at FPS-type games who may not have needed any kind of tracking ammunition to achieve those ends. I'm not saying anything about whether somebody was cheating or not but much of the stuff the referenced post describes can be done without.

"strafing" in FPS terms is to step directly to the left or right without turning. In SL that happens when in mouselook you hit the left or right controls. Combine this with mouse control of the direction you are facing and all sorts of useful things can be achieved...

The "circle-strafe" - face your target and start stepping left or right (strafing) whilst turning your view with the mouse to keep them targeted.... you will be moving in a tight circle around them (therefore very hard to for them to keep a bead on you) meanwhile unloading your weapon into them from every angle.

The "full-speed-spin" (if you can get used to the twitchiness of setting your mouse sensitivity way high and still place accurate shots).. You're running away, the enemy is behind you.. coordinate a fast 180 degree rotation with changing from running forward to running backwards, this brings your pursuer into your sights, squeeze off a round or two (or an arrow) then spin back and switch to runnign forwards again.. Skilled FPS-ers can often do this fast enough that it seems their fire comes out of their backs.

"strafe-running" Most movement engines in FPS games treat strafing seperately from normal movement, with the result that even if your run velocity is X m/sec forwards you can move faster by strafing right or left whist running. You wont be moving directly forwards or backwards but you will have the extra speed. If SL does the same thing (which I dont know) then it would be a valid technique in combat here too.

SL controls behave in strafe-mode when click holding on your avatar or it's nametag, allowing you to steer with the mouse, and mouse via cursor or other keys. at least to the players view. not sure if it affects angle of fire or not since the avatar on screen does not appear to be strafing, but rather facing the strafe direction.

You can achieve the same effect by holding down the Shift key and using the movement arrows.
