Nice easy question coming up..

Anyone know of a good site/place to get/download music, when I say music I mean music I could use as background stuff and legal. Yes I could go P2P and download pretty much anything or buy tracks from a host of sites. I wouldn't however be able to use it as background music in say a movie particularly if it's going on YouTube or similar.

So it's background sort of music (various genres) which can be downloaded and used legally, it doesn't have to be free it could be a pay site or pay per track..within reason

Thanks..Perre..:)

Or if there isn't such a thing..what do others do for background tracks..?

If you want a legal background music track for a video, do a search for "royalty free music" or "buyout music".

This music costs...for example, a CD full of royalty free tunes may run $50 to $100, instead of the $15 you'd pay for a typical CD at Walmart. What you are buying is the right to use it in your own productions.

Normally I would assume there is some reason you left out the obvious, but just in case -- There are hundereds of internet radio stations to choose from as well.

As long as you dont make a profit from it, i think you can be ok.

Quite cheap (few dollars per track) and royalty free. You may need to check the fine print as they are primarily aimed at flash websites (afaik). They also do sound effects for games, etc.

Has all sorts of genres.
* Music Packs * Ambient * Breakbeat * Classical * Chill-Out * Corporate * Drum and Bass * Electronica * Experimental * Funk * Garage * Hip Hop * House
* Jazz * New Age * Rock * Pop * Trance * World Beat * Other

There are plenty more on google. You have to be careful though as some places have wonky agreements whereby you are only allowed to play the song to 100 other people, or 1000 times a month, among various other rubbish.

No. I'm not about to start a whole thread on copyright and intellectual property, but I'll refer you to the US Copyright Office home page. Also do a search for an article by Douglas Spotted Eagle entitled, "My Voice, My Choice".

There are also plenty of musicians in SL (myself included) who may let you use existing stuff they've done or even compose something to order in return for publicity and a reasonable amount of lindens

dmusic.com about any genre you can find

most are free to use by asking any of the artist. and many are licensed to use non profit.. some even for profit.

another great source if you are using this non commercial is searching Creative Commons! there are many songs/music/backing etc. available (internet archive, and other sites like that) music from some one time popular artist that use this.

Sound click I think actually list what artist have CC (licensed) or not as well.

but as many are finding on you tube its considered fair use...but some such as Prince are suing for his song "playing" in the back ground on a radio while a baby dances! un planed... it depends on the artist/ or rather the owner "publisher" of the music what would happen..

We have had cover songs DMCA take down at you tube, and so far all have been put back up, but theirs a real fine line on using it for this as fair use. so follow Lindals link and read before you try to just use any thing. recearch fair use as well.

again there are many free and licensed music sites (that 100 for CDs is a rip off! they got it all free!)

if you can describe what kind of genre you are looking for I can certainly point you to a good site or page..

oh another is podsafe music .. most can be used non profit for podcast, shoutcast radio as well as things like this. even with permission always note somewhere in credits . crediting who the music is by, and give a web addy to musicians love publicity!

While it's not necessarily "songs", it's a massive collection of music "beds" which are commonly used in radio/tv/movie productions, royalty-free.

Most royalty free music houses compose their own.

Wow thanks folks, just in from work to find loads of leads to follow up :D.

I've been playing around with Fraps over the last couple of months and thought it would be fun to put together a 4-5 minute movie, a sort of collection of surreal action clips about pretty much anything (a SL stream of conciousness). After watching Torley's movie 'Watch Cat Heads Roll' and I realised a musical background would set the pace and tie everything together. I don't as yet know what genre I'm looking for I guess I'll know when I hear it. Funnily enough it was the Prince thing that got me thinking I might want to be a little cautious particularly if it going onto some public site like YouTube.

Anyway..thanks again for the info I'll work my way through it and hopefully find some suitable royalty free tracks..:D
