External IM/Chat?

Hello all,

I once heard there is a tool to chat and send IM that does not require the SL client but is a pure text client - any hints where to find it? Didn't find it by Google search, I guess I'm simply too stupid

There is one problem with all of these.

Your avatar still appears in world. I'm sure you can imagine how awkward this can look to those around you. An unresponsive bot really. None of these clients fully support attachments and sometimes you can appear unclothed as well.

Actually, considering that I get messages from HUDs when I log in with Metabolt, I think the attachments do appear. I'll need some experiments to make sure, but I did not have any problems last time I logged in my experimental alt and observed the results from the normal viewer.

And nothing actually protects you securely from appearing unclothed, SL is like that.

But yes, your avatar does appear inworld when using one of those clients and hiding in the dark basement of your home before using it is a good idea.

You can end up dumped into a welcome area naked with regular SL, so.....

Always specify 'home' for the login location and hope that your home is available and you do not get dumped into a Welcome Area. If you do not have a semi-private Home location set, join the inworld Forum Cartel group, TP up to the changing area, and set your Home to there. It is almost always empty there, so you'll only have an issue if the sim is unavailable at login time.

Ive checked Sleek and Metabolt using alts. All attachments load and I am clothed. You can see open chat so if someone were to talk to you, you can respond. And you can tp too so if you do end up in a crowded area you can always type in the coordinates to someplace else.

It has not been finished developing yet, but you may want to keep an ear on the progress of SLim. This will be the "official" client for exactly that once LL finishes it. In the meantime good luck with the other suggestions.

Not that I'm sayin I would mind being violated up there or wherever.

you can send a message this way, but you cannot really have an easy back and forth conversation this way. Actually, because of the way the message is delivered inworld -- a message from an object -- I am not even sure you can directly resond to it inworld. Having a slow IM conversation via the 'forward to email' option would actually be easier.

So the "Please violate me" message in your profile hasn't helped?

You can respond to it inworld, and the message via IM can obviously be received via email. I've used it numerous times this way myself. It's good if you're the one who must initiate the contact from outworld.

Most of my friends and I have opened avatar specific GMail accounts and use Google Chat when we can't go on. (^_^)y

Oh, yeah, ditto that. The Google Talk client is pretty thin, better than opening the browser for the chat app IMHO.

Nice to know you can respond back. I have only used it when I needed to send a quick message to someone and I was at work and I did not have a real recent IM-to-email from them.
