Seems that a while back you could reply to an IM that showed up in your e-mail and it would go to the person in-world? Is that still possible?

Yes, actually doing that as we speak
.Just remember that the IM needs to be recent (I would say lass than 3 days old) _____________________

Yes.
Just reply to the e-mail as you would any other. I would delete any quoted text/signature though. Not sure exactly how it works but I've read that sometimes quoted text/signature left in the reply will send the name associated with the e-mail account to the person in SL. So, if your RL name is in your e-mail signature, delete the signature before you send the reply. A _____________________

The IM-as-email is sent via a temporary email address that remains active for a short time - I've heard two days.

I think the recipient receives your email rl email address when you reply if it's set up that way in your options. It could also send your RL name if your email is set up to reply to other emails with your name.
I just use a yahoo account for SL. If you get a reply from me it says it's from "Trout". I really don't care who has it, so there's no real loss if someone figures out what it is. _____________________

Interesting..... I have had IMs into my email that I didn't reply to until i got back in-world because I thought that it would give away my email addy if I replied there and then, I didn't know you could switch that on or off. Where would I find that preference to change it?

Also be careful as sometimes, no idea how, the recipient will receive your email addy. Also, some email accounts will not reply to IMs. I had one that would not, so I switched to Rock.com which works fine. _____________________

Gmail works well for this as well.
Additionally, watch if you have a default signature marked to send on reply's...that may include your info in the IM sent back inworld. _____________________

And pay attention to what kind of device your using to send email--Blackberries append a little message that says something like, "Email Sent via Wireless Blackberry" or some such. Not really traceable, but an rl intrusion.

Hmm, revealing your real details and email address is only possible when you didn't delete the quote part, or if you have a revealing signature. It's true some email services don't work with IMs-through-email, because those services must've been using a different email sending protocol that's not IMAP, or an old IMAP protocol version (IMAP0.1 through IMAP3.9).
Though, you can use AjaxLife (http://ajaxlife.katharineberry.co.uk/client/login.kat) to log in from somewhere you can't install Second Life, SLeek, or any other LibSL or LindenSL-powered application. Although it's a Teen Grid-oriented service, it's compatible for both grids. _____________________

Not really traceable, but an rl intrusion. Hmm, true... I used to talk to a business owner once about an old house version that wasn't in stock anymore -- a perfect mini villa. The replies from his Blackberry contained a big (About 4 SL lines) message saying "Through Cingular Wireless......Email XXX@XXX.XXX...Any replies will...". So, be careful to either use webmail through a Blackberry or an alias (Gmail alias or another email account). _____________________

They get that when you hit reply and your email account puts your info in the text window. huh? I use yahoo and it has never done that. Simply make sure all you are sending in the text window is your message and there is no info below or above what you are typing there. _____________________

Just use Hotmail, Gmail or Yahoo or something for your SL e-mail.
