Has anyone tried doing this?
I was wondering if it was possible to install a custom Operating System and then install second life onto that?

Hmmm...not sure this is possible. Just use Sony's HOME until...until you...I don't know.

I don't think a custom operating system is possible on a console--that is, not unless you're a wiz with hardware and programming...and emulating.

PS3 officially supports Linux.

So it is at least hypothetically possible though i've not heard of it actually being done.

In theory this is possible. You can install a version of Linux that should support a compile of SL's Linux client. I don't want to bugger up my PS3 though trying this, and anyway my PC is sufficient (and it seems like a bloody hassle). This would be a fun experiment for someone's blog.

I'm sure it can be done running Linux. A friend of mine plays a few online games(wow, eve-online) on his Sony PSP.

The thing to do is look for the 'hacking' sites related to Sony hardware for more/better info. Don't mean 'hacking' in the term most know it, but modifying it's OS.

Exactly why I was wondering if someone's done it already.

You could run linux on the PS2.

I think the graphics chip is locked out when running linux on the PS3, this would make SL pretty much unplayable.

There'd at least need to be OpenGL for the console's graphics H/W; I'd kinda guess that unlikely, but I dunno the innerds of PS3.

It is currently not possible and unlikley to ever be. Despite Linux, access to the graphics chips is locked down, as stated, (for obvious reasons).

Home could wipe the floor with SL if Sony really wanted to; but it seems to be more of a 3D version of XBL, with no user-created content involved, and only an economy aimed direct at Sony's wallet. Shame really. Maybe on PS4... ;)
