tr.im is now in the process of discontinuing service, effective immediately.

Statistics can no longer be considered reliable, or reliably available going forward.
However, all tr.im links will continue to redirect, and will do so until at least December 31, 2009.
Your tweets with tr.im URLs in them will not be affected.

We regret that it came to this, but all of our efforts to avoid it failed.
No business we approached wanted to purchase tr.im for even a minor amount.

There is no way for us to monetize URL shortening -- users won't pay for it -- and we just can't
justify further development since Twitter has all but annointed bit.ly the market winner.
There is simply no point for us to continue operating tr.im, and pay for its upkeep.

We apologize for the disruption and inconvenience this may cause you.

Those who use url shorteners to give SL related links here and elsewhere might want to reconsider whether it's a good idea or not.

The statement made is one I noticed a long time ago, there's no way to monetize these services.. which makes them money pits to operate. (someone pays for the bandwidth, etc)..

These services are at best, fleeting. I may need to register a short url for use in my shop (I relied on tr.im to shorten the URLs for my SLX listings, cause llLoadURL was a little verbose.)

I don't know why anyone wouldn't use tinyurl.com, it's been around far, far longer than tr.im and does exactly the same thing. Newer isn't always better. :)

Tinyurl.com doesn't have some of the tracking features some of the new url shorteners have so that you know where people were clicking from. It's useful to know where your marketing efforts are best served. Unfortunately they do have problems like what happened with tr.im and others that have been hacked and everything redirects to spam sites. This kinda gives an overview of some of the features different services offer although I'm not sure if it is completely up to date: http://searchengineland.com/analysis-which-url-shortening-service-should-you-use-17204

Others think url shorteners really suck http://boingboing.net/2009/04/04/why-url-shorteners-s.html

I've used Metamark (xrl.us) for years.

We have restored tr.im, and re-opened its website. We have been absolutely overwhelmed by the popular response, and the countless public and private appeals I have received to keep tr.im alive....

Does that read as someone gave him some money or what?

Which, if your wondering, is absolutely fine.
