Should we allow remote control of our prims?

Please take a look this at JIRA: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-12200

It asks for the ability to get an "inventory" of your rezzed prims in-world, showing the location. Personally, I think this would be a great idea to have - no clue how easy that would be to make work, though.

I agree with most of the JIRA but have a bit of a problem with the idea of being able to use a remote object to view the world around it, because I think it could be used as an easy "spy" tool. The original poster obviously disagrees with me.

If you like the JIRA, in general, please vote for it, or add your comments.

not voting on it as the whole idea is too complex and probably will never happen (especially the way the person that submitted it explained it) too much resources, and we think the grid is slow now LOL

however I just wanted to say I do agree, the remote viewing thing would be a spy's dream.

IF there was a way to just simply track anything you rezzed in world that would not cause a drag on the system, I would be all for it, it would help recover things I lost when first in SL (when rezzing, trying to move and it shoots off to god knows where)

Havent checked the JIRA yet- but agreed on this! God I stil lose stuff and hope whereever it turns up wil have auto reuturn! As for the spy thing- well- sadly it already exists.

I made some suggestions on that one.

The remote viewing would not need to render the linkset in context, just what the linkset looks like.

you mean there is already a way to see into a different sim, just by using a prim that is in that sim? (or any area for that matter)

I've always wished SL had something like There does (did? are they even around any more?), where you can retrieve anything you own from anywhere in the world whether you know where it is or not. In There it was mostly useful for letting people use your vehicles without worry of not getting them back.

Of course I can see where it would be a huge burden on the SL infrastructure, having people walk around with another virtual inventory of every object they have on the grid. Would be nice though.

Perhaps not "see" like cams - but there are listeners and such- i do not know what the limitations are but i know i am damn leery of anything anyone gives me that I don't know who they are

Okay, first off, if it's limited only to those items that you own (This doesn't include group items either) and not an ounce more, I don't see how this could be used as a spy tool. Though if there is a way to make it a spy, then I could see just limiting it to returning objects...

I'd take it a step further and allow group/estate owners to allow others to track down items.

Goodness knows I'd love something like this, so that when I accidentally orbit an object or send it off into the wild blue yonder while I'm working, I can just bring up a screen and delete/return it.

If you own an object, anywhere other than your Home, you can use it to 'spy' without anyone knowing, and watch various things take place, whether or not the participants want you to.

Only if this proposal allowed you to see, in context, the object and what was around it. As proposed, the object itself could perhaps be previewed, like looking at a clothing items in the preview pane before downloading a clothing texture. It would not necessarily have to show you a camera view of the area around the linkset.

The main feature I would want to see from this proposal is the ability to get back the exact sim and coordinates of possibly strayed or lost objects, so you could TP to them and exanine them. Even the sim owner's tools don't do tat for you - they only allow you to return all prims belonging to one person from the sim. I recall once trying to move a linkset that was normally invisible - a rolled up tatami mat that only was to be visible when the scripted flat version of the mat was not visible. But something twitched wrong, and it went flying out of the sim on some vector. I never did find it, though I searched all sims on those vectors. And it never came back to my lost and found. For all I know, it's still somewhere on the Northern edge of the old South Continent, somewhere...

Yeah, realized that a little while after posting, and never got around to changing my post... when I wrote it, was going by what it sounded like from the thread, rather than actually reading the JIRA lol

Ha! I just lost a prim and so voted for this.

Goodness knows where the prim went. I was moving it sideways in my skybox, my hand slipped and it shot through the wall. It's not on my land - I only have 512 and all my prims are accounted for. I've flown across two sims in the direction it went, checking each land parcel on the way in About Land - Objects Owned by Others (all show 0) and it's not showing up on the minimap either. I even went to (0,0,0) on my sim ... nothing! Oh well, it wasn't important or anything, I just don't like leaving litter. If anybody finds a lurid glowing boulder on their land at 1300 then I do apologise.

ETA: Found it! After an hour of being lost it suddenly showed up on the minimap. It had gone to (255,0,255)

Yeah, this thread makes it sound like a spy tool, which is why I asked HOW, since I'd read the JIRA (except the comments.) People were probably jumping on this:

From: JIRA
*(unlikley but worth thinking about) the ability to view a rendered 3D version of the object and its contents from where you are currently located

I don't think this is necessary or even possible until we can actually preview from our actual inventory anyways. But I'd kill for an inventory-like list of rezzed objects that give me location and a remote return/delete function.

I also added my comment about how the object could be rendered on a black (or whatever) color background. No spying allowed ;)

Sorry about any misunderstandings - I thought I made it clear that the remote viewing option was only a part of it, and the only part that I had an issue with. i would really like to see the rest of it implemented. And rendering it in a window with a black background would be a great idea too.

Mind you, if you are going to add that, then you could also add "previewing" items from your inventory, to finally work out what all those "object"s are.....

There is something magical about that 255 elevation. I often work above 3000m at a sim edge, and sometimes things that get pushed across the sim boundary just pop down to 255. Unfortunately, I haven't found a way to reproduce this effect reliably enough to describe coherently in a jira, but at least it makes a good place to hunt.
